Camp GirlForward Texas Intern – GirlForward – Austin, TX

GirlForward is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to empowering adolescent refugee girls who have been resettled in the U.S. from countries around the world. This summer, we are launching Camp GirlForward in Austin and are looking for interns to support our Camp Director! Camp GirlForward is GirlForward’s academic summer program designed to meet the needs of girls with limited and interrupted educational backgrounds through instruction in various subjects, as well as enrichment activities designed to build confidence and leadership skills. Camp is built on the tenets of social justice and will involve intensives in reading, writing, and research.

Internship Description

GirlForward is seeking a Camp GirlForward teaching intern to work with us 30-32 hours per week to support our Camp GirlForward Director in the classroom and during enrichment activities. This position works directly with the Camp GirlForward Director and serves as both a teaching assistant and camp counselor.

Specific responsibilities include:

– assisting Director with classroom management

-assisting Director with curriculum development when needed

– working one-on-one with girls in the classroom

– leading small groups of girls in group discussions and activities

– assisting with planning and coordination of field trips

– grading assignments

– helping girls navigate public transit

– contributing blog posts to GirlForward blog about experience

– completing administrative tasks such as preparing materials, monitoring supplies, tidying space, attendance related data entry

Qualifications

– exceptional written and verbal communication skills

– organizational skills and attention to detail

– able to work well independently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision

– strong interest in and commitment to supporting girls’ empowerment

– experience tutoring, preferably English language learners

– experience working with teenagers, specifically adolescent girls

– interest in refugee issues, international issues

– comfortable using public transit

– some college completed

– self-motivated, enthusiastic, and outgoing

Details

This is an unpaid internship, but college credit can be awarded. Camp GirlForward will be held Tuesdays-Fridays from June 9 – July 31. Interns must be present during Camp hours (TBD, most likely 8 AM – 3 PM) plus two additional hours per week for lesson planning and supervision. Interns should be available for training during the week of June 1st, specific days and times flexible. GirlForward will provide interns with Capital Metro transit passes for the duration of the summer.
