The Education Programs Manager is accountable for the efficient, on-target, and on-budget delivery of a continuum of live continuing legal education (CLE) events that ensure Washington lawyers are prepared for competent and professional practice. The manager will understand WSBA’s mission and strategic goals for education programming and translate these goals into actionable steps for a cross-departmental team that designs, implements, and evaluates each seminar and conference. The Manager leads a business and process improvement initiative, working with outside consultants and internal collaborators.

Job Summary:

Ongoing, the position supervises a team of developers and coordinators, and is supervised by the Director of Advancement/Chief Development Officer. The position implements the overall strategic direction set in consultation with the Director, handles day to day matters related to education event development, and receives guidance and support on unusual or policy impact matters. Further, the Manager will provide leadership in all phases of CLE development and delivery, manage the team’s relationship with the webcasting, marketing, and products teams, reference current CLE policies in decision making and contribute to the development of new policies, and build meaningful partnerships with WSBA sections and legal sector peers.

Day to day, the Education Program Manager’s responsibilities include: developing and managing the annual calendar of all education events; Identifying and managing the development of select programs, such as regulatory-related programs and paid speakers; leading business systems and process improvement efforts in collaboration with the Directors of Advancement and Communications, using consultant resources as needed; leading the team in adopting and adapting to new practices; assisting the Communications and Advancement department directors in developing an annual budget for the education programs portfolio; tracking, managing and meeting revenue and expense targets for CLE seminars and conferences; collaborating with the department director and accounting staff to ensure pricing models are implemented in accordance with policy and achieve revenue targets; managing the education programs staff, (inclusive of coaching, feedback, goal setting, workload allocation and prioritization, professional development, planning, and performance management); working closely with the Senior Section Leaders Liaisons to improve value to WSBA practice sections in developing and delivering educational programs; collaborating with the WSBA Events Coordinator regarding sponsorships and venue contracts and serving as staff liaison to the CLE Committee. The collaborative nature of work at the WSBA often requires the Education Programs Manager to handle other duties to be assigned.

Education: Qualified candidates will have an undergraduate degree or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the duties associated with this position. Highly qualified candidates will have a MBA, MPA, or similar advanced degree, or JD with relevant management experience

Requirements: Applicants should possess management experience within a legal or law-related setting; a background in program planning and management; budget development and administration expertise; contract negotiation and management skills; supervisory experience (coaching, feedback, mentoring, development planning, performance management, team building, etc.) and event and/or trade show experience. Highly qualified candidates will also have experience delivering continuing legal education, or other professional education, in a regulated environment.

Proficiencies: This position involves working within the framework of established WSBA policies, exercising highly developed professional judgment and decision-making in day-to-day management. Sound analysis and judgment when nurturing relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., representatives of Sections of the WSBA) and responding to inquiries from other staff members are essential.

The successful candidate will further possess strong familiarity with adult education principles and best practices; a firm grasp of basic business and financial principals; a highly developed knowledge of electronic media and tools for delivering continuing education, and an affinity for electronic delivery of education materials; excellent communication skills (including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely; ability to communicate with poise, tact and diplomacy, and display grace under pressure). Strong organizational skills will be essential in handling the multiplicity of deadline driven projects, as well as an ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately and collaborate effectively in a team setting.

The Advancement Department is a professional, high-volume, fast-paced, detail-oriented and collaborative environment. Accordingly, The Education Programs Manager must have the ability to elicit/receive communications, and communicate effectively with, volunteer chairs and speakers, individuals at all levels of the organization, representatives of businesses and outside entities. This communication will alternatively be in person, by phone, by email, and correspondence generated on a computer. The selected candidate must have the ability to travel to meetings and seminar sites, and to lift containers of books/materials.
