Deputy Director -Compass Family Services

Position Summary:
The Deputy Director works closely with the Executive Director to lead Compass Family Services, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and strategic objectives. The Deputy Director directly oversees all aspects of service delivery provided by Compass’ housing programs, family resource center, childcare subsidy programs, as well as the agency’s Impact + Learning team and the Operations and Facilities Manager.

Responsibilities:
Organization Mission and Strategy:
 With the Executive Director, lead and oversee the implementation of strategic planning processes to ensure that the organization can successfully and sustainably fulfill its mission.
 Hold and oversee the organization’s service delivery partnerships and relationship-building with other nonprofit and civic organizations. Ensure an active and generous presence in the community.
 Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
 Work cooperatively with the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to ensure that these ideals are upheld and prioritized at all levels of the agency.
 Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
 Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, guiding the organization and making key decisions.
 Oversee contracts with government funders and ensure that government and private contractual obligations are met.
 Partner with the Executive Director and Director of Development and Communications to strategically identify and pursue funding opportunities that are aligned with the agency’s organizational vision.
 Work alongside the Finance team to support all of the agency’s programs to make decisions regarding services and funding prioritization, developing systems for thoughtful spending, and closely monitoring and managing programs’ budgets.
 Provide direct supervision, thought partnership, and support to the Director of Impact + Learning. Ensure the effective use of data and evaluation functions to demonstrate program effectiveness and refine program implementation.

Programs:
 Provide direct supervision and ongoing support to the Director of Housing Programs, the Program Directors for the Family Resource Center and Childcare Support Services, and the Program Manager of the NeighborNest. Support in the delivery of program development and oversight, staff supervision, budget management, and professional development.
 Work closely with the Executive Director and the Director of Housing Programs on issues related to the delivery of services across the agency.
 Work cooperatively with the Clinical Director to ensure that services to client families are delivered with an integrated, trauma-informed clinical lens approach, that the programs have appropriate levels of clinical support and that clinical services are delivered in an effective manner.
 Ensure that all programs provide fair and equitable services to clients regardless of gender, race, nationality, sexual orientation, disability status, or other criteria.
 Be available for crisis intervention, case consultation and intervention with difficult phone calls and client situations as needed.

Organization Operations:
 Responsible for the effective administration of Compass’ operations.
 With Program Directors, responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.
 Provide direct supervision and ongoing support to the Operations and Facilities Manager.
 Ensure that Compass’ IT systems are effective, cost-competitive, and aligned with the needs of staff and other users.

Qualifications:
 Five or more years of senior nonprofit management experience, or other equivalent management experience, ideally overseeing multiple programs. Significant knowledge of and demonstrated experience with operating a human services organization, and/or has worked in human services from the government side.
 Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to anti-racism and to eradicating homelessness in San Francisco. (Special consideration will be provided for lived/personal experience.)
 Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization.
 Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
 Strong aptitude for verbal and written communication, presentation, and relationship development. Ability to convey a vision of Compass’ strategic future to staff, board, volunteers and donors.
 Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, coach, and mentor teams.
 Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful strategic plans.
 In-depth knowledge of best practices in management and governance.
 Working knowledge or high-level understanding of financial strategies and finance-related performance metrics.
 Basic knowledge of and/or experience with public funding and/or fundraising, specifically government contracts and grants for social service delivery.
 Knowledge of program evaluation practices and methodologies.
 Ability to interface with and engage external stakeholders, including board members, public and corporate partners, and volunteers as necessary.
 Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills.
 Bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, non-profit administration/management or related field encouraged but not required, or a combination of equivalent educational and lived experience.
 Bilingual/bicultural a plus.
