Position: Volunteer & Project Coordinator

Location: Southeast Seattle

Position Description:

Horn of Africa Services currently has an opening for a Volunteer & Project Coordinator. This position manages all volunteer related services including: recruitment, placement, data capturing, and supervising. This individual will also provide direct service in HOAS’ After School Program as a tutor for K-12 grade East African students. Lastly, the position will assist with various projects, mostly targeted at development, grant writing, and reporting for small grants at the agency.

Horn of Africa Services (HOAS) has been providing services to the East African immigrant and refugee community for over 20 years. We serve individuals and families from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and neighboring countries with a staff speaking Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, and Somali. HOAS provides case management and referral services, Job Readiness Training for recently arrived high school students, and after school tutoring for 65 K-12 students. The role of the Volunteer & Project Coordinator is to recruit suitable volunteers to sustain our core programs, while also addressing ongoing needs within the organization for additional volunteers and skill-based assistance. The individual will also support the ongoing success of the After School Program by providing direct service tutoring to youth, supporting the After School Program Lead in managing the program, and implementing strategies to address the educational success of East African students. This position also includes grant writing for foundations and various funding opportunities. Keeping up to date with foundations, granting agencies, and working with the organizations development team to secure funds for ongoing and new programs. Finally, The Volunteer & Project Coordinator assists with various projects including tasks like updating social media and the organization’s website, reporting for small grants, and other projects as needed.

Responsibilities:

Volunteer Coordinating, 30%

Conduct outreach and recruitment strategy to secure new volunteers
Build and maintain relationships with local colleges, universities, communities, and agencies to recruit new volunteers
Attend volunteer fairs, cultural events, and other community outreach events
Track volunteer hours and interpret volunteer data for use in funding and reporting processes
Hold New Volunteer Trainings at regularly scheduled times to orient and train new volunteers
Monitor and support volunteers to ensure their success while volunteering
Implement volunteer recognition
Coordinate with other departments within the organization to assess needs for volunteers

Tutoring in the After School Program, 30%

Provide eight hours a week of direct service tutoring in the After School Program
Assist students enrolled with homework completion, reading and math skills, and instilling positive behavior and life choices
Work with ASP Coordinator and Program Lead to manage the program and implement enrichment activities for the youth
Contribute to the monthly After School Program report

Development & Grant Writing, 30%

Assist the development team in writing Letters of Inquiry, grant applications, and funding proposals
Utilize the foundation database to stay updated on upcoming grant applications and requests for proposals
Organize data from inside the organization, research from educational institutions, and state and national statistics to assist in grant applications

Various Projects, 10%

Keep the website and social media updated with current projects and happenings
Support staff from other departments with small projects as needed

Qualifications:

Experience with juggling and staying on top of many projects at once
Ability to work independently. Self-starter with experience identifying and implementing projects that would develop organization.
Experience with working effectively with individuals from other cultures, particularly multilingual, immigrant, and refugee individuals
Experience in volunteer coordination and project management
Experience and passion for tutoring and working with youth
Four-year college degree highly preferred
Experience in volunteer coordination, project management, or working with youth highly preferred
A passion for advocating for and enhancing the livelihood of the East African immigrant and refugee population in Seattle
The ability to work in a multi-cultural and diverse environment with sensitivity and humility
The ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
The ability to take initiative and work independently without constant supervision
Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary
Experience working in after school youth programs, tutoring programs, or youth services
Experience coordinating volunteers a plus
The ability to speak Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, or Somali a plus, but not required

This position is between 20-30 hours a week, with the potential to move to full time in the future.

Compensation between $11-13/hour, DOE
