Public Relations & Marketing Intern – HomeSight – Seattle, WA

Reports To: Community Engagement Coordinator, with frequent collaboration between independent marketing firm, local media outlets, and locally owned businesses in Rainier Valley.

Time Commitment: 2months, 15hrs/week

Salary Range: A stipend of $1,000 will be provided

Purpose: HomeSight—a community based non-profit building strong, vibrant communities through homeownership, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization—is planning the 5th anniversary of Plate of Nations—the signature Rainier Valley dine-around event featuring locally owned restaurants emblematic of the unique multicultural character of our community. To ensure that the 5th anniversary event of Plate of Nations is our biggest and best yet, HomeSight is hiring a Public Relations & Marketing Intern to assist with our writing, media relations, marketing, and promotions efforts.

Organization: For nearly 25 years HomeSight, a 501(c)(3) organization, has been based in and worked towards the revitalization of Rainier Valley, serving communities with the highest concentration of poverty, and the most racial and ethnic diversity in the city. Our homebuyer education, counseling, and lending programs support our mission of building strong, vibrant communities through homeownership, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization. HomeSight also support opportunities for local businesses and cultural organizations, and actively facilitates community revitalization through equitable development in Rainier Valley.

As part of HomeSight’s business development efforts, Plate of Nations showcases the delicious diversity of locally owned restaurants along MLK in Rainier Valley. Offering global menus from local venues at discounted prices, Plate of Nations attracts diners from 37 Seattle neighborhoods, 19 cities throughout WA, and 4 different states. In honor of Plate of Nations’ 5th anniversary, participating businesses are going green—cutting waste, saving water, reducing pollution, and shedding light on the necessity for good global stewardship and to make a commitment to sustainability. Plate of Nations runs March 27th-April 13th and offers a passport contest for foodies to win prizes by collecting stamps.

Position: Duties may include but are not limited to writing PR materials or marketing copy including press releases, website copy, coordinating participating business materials and specialty publications, maintaining and building relationships with local media, venders and businesses, maintaining and building press kits, maintaining and building social media outlets, and monitoring and reporting the impact of marketing efforts, making adjustments where necessary.

Qualifications: This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, proof-reading skills, the ability to work to deadlines, and effectively multi-task. Candidates with journalism, communications, marketing, business, and/or PR background would be a good fit for this position though such degrees are not required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is a must as well as being Internet and Social Media savvy. Person should be enthusiastic, articulate, poised, and professional.

Support Provided: An onsite orientation including and introduction to Plate of Nations as well as HomeSight will be conducted by the Community Engagement Coordinator, followed by a tour of participating Plate of Nations businesses.
