Director of Finance – Social Finance Inc – Boston, MA

The newly-created Director of Finance role will develop and guide financial strategy, reporting, budgeting and risk management for Social Finance as it strives for financial sustainability and best practice. Reporting to the Director of Operations at this $5 million annual budget organization, the Director of Finance will play a key management role within the financial team. Additionally, the Director of Finance will lead the final implementation of a new financial software platform (OneNFP, formerly Serenic Navigator) that will facilitate better financial posting, management reporting, grants management, and budgeting. Currently, Social Finance uses outsourced bookkeeping, but over time this may be brought in-house to be overseen by this position.

Responsibilities

Financial Strategy and Budgeting

Work closely with Managing Director and Director of Operations to prepare annual organizational operating budget, budget to actual reporting, and quarterly forecasts
Prepare project budgets for both contract and grant-based proposals
Manage finance committee calendar, producing quarterly financial reports for both the committee and Board of Directors

Financial Management and Reporting

Manage preparation of audits, financial statements and varied fiscal reports
Oversee bookkeeper’s accurate and timely transaction posting to the General Ledger
Oversee revenue contracts, the production of invoices and recognition of revenue
Oversee expense contracts and commitments, implementing authorization protocols as necessary
Review monthly and ad hoc reports, including budget variance analysis
Monitor the financial activity on grant programs and prepare expenditure reports for program managers as needed
Manage annual audit process
Manage month-end and year-end close of financials
Responsible for management and maintenance of chart of accounts
Manage federal and state nonprofit tax filings and reports for Social Finance, Inc. and any for-profit filings and reports for affiliates as necessary
Oversee payroll and 403b retirement savings plan contributions and compliance
Oversee and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations
Develop cash projections and oversee firm’s active cash management policy
Work with investor relations team to support financial and tax reporting for funded Social Impact Bond projects
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Risk Management and Compliance

Develop and monitor internal controls, policies and procedures
Oversee insurance coverage and policies for the firm and its affiliates
Work with deal and advisory teams during project proposal phase to produce all mandatory forms, registrations, compliance efforts, and project budgets

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have an accounting, business or related college degree, thorough knowledge of accounting practices and procedures, and at least eight years of demonstrated, full-time work experience in a relevant job, i.e. public accounting, accounting or as Director of Finance at another firm. Candidates must have solid analytical and technical skills, as well as oral and written communication skills. Considerable knowledge of budgetary, accounting and reporting systems required. Experience with OneNFP accounting software (also known as Serenic Navigator) is highly valued, as is experience in public accounting, and/or working with state and federal grants. Non-profit accounting experience required (either via employment or via supporting nonprofit clients while at a public accounting firm)

Strong understanding of US GAAP
Ability to develop financial management KPI reporting framework
Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion is an absolute requirement
CPA is not required for position, but will be highly valued experience

Dynamic individual with strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills are sought for this role
Ability to operate in an unstructured but demanding environment, and demonstrable track record of high performance; high level of independence and motivation required

Ability to work within deadlines and to work independently with minimal supervision
