Director of Development

Position Responsibilities
The Director of Development plays a leading role in the overall sustainability and development of resources for the East Bay Community Foundation (EBCF). The Director of Development is responsible for developing new business (e.g., donor-advised funds, agency funds, and supporting organizations) and for relationship development. As part of a three-person team reporting to the Managing Director of Development & Marketing, the Director of Development serves as a resource for charitable planning for individuals, families, and professional advisors. Specifically, the Director of Development will be responsible for:

Business Development: Individual Donors
• Actively prospecting for, cultivating, and soliciting new donors ( individuals, non-profits, families) and assisting them in establishing new funds at EBCF (donor-advised, testamentary, supporting organizations, and agency funds)
• Leveraging relationships with Board members, staff, professional advisors, and current EBCF donors, to develop relationships with specific individuals and organizations, leading to new donor-advised funds, agency funds, and philanthropic support for specific EBCF initiatives
• Establishing and maintaining active relationships with professional advisors (wealth advisors, CPAs, estate planners) through networking and face-to-face meetings; leading and developing a strategy to engage the professional advisor community
• Leading strategy, research, and cultivation efforts for one of EBCF’s geographic sub-regions of the East Bay (e.g., Southern Alameda County, Tri-Valley)
• Stewarding a portfolio of up to 80 donors, including solicitation for unrestricted gifts throughout the year
• Engaging in community promotion, advocacy, and education efforts to advance EBCF’s image and visibility and increase awareness of its philanthropic services
• Meeting monthly goals for face-to-face meetings with donors, advisors, and prospects

Management of Development Efforts
• Ensuring that fund agreements, gifts, and gift liquidations comply with applicable gift
• standards, EBCF policies, and state/federal laws, obtaining legal counsel where appropriate
• Maintaining complete and current contact reports for all work in central donor database/CRM system
• Working on an ongoing basis with other EBCF staff to create a cohesive, coordinated
• calendar of events and event implementation for both donor and advisor communities

Profile of the Successful Candidate
This position offers the right candidate the opportunity to put well-honed major gift skills to work on behalf of the East Bay. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in EBCF’s programmatic work and the desire to develop resources to support the Foundation’s mission. The position requires someone who is eager to embrace frequent outward-facing contact and who is able to work proactively and energetically to build and maintain a pipeline of major gift prospects. Specifically, EBCF seeks a professional with the following attributes:

• At least five years of front-line professional fundraising experience, including experience in major gifts and strong generalist knowledge of planned giving vehicles and strategies OR five years experience in business development with a commercial provider of donor-advised funds or wealth advisory services for high net worth individuals
• Ability to prioritize, plan and execute strategic moves management; to self-manage; and to work collaboratively
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Facility with business software systems and the ability to adopt new systems easily
• Knowledge of prospect research methods and tools
• Detail orientation balanced with the ability to easily interact with a diverse range of people
• Ability to connect EBCF’s programmatic goals with donor interests, and vice versa
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree, CFRE, or CAP certification is highly desirable
• A strong commitment to ongoing professional development related to fundraising and/or planned giving
