Communications Director – InnerCity Struggle – Los Angeles, CA

Position Summary

The Communications Director will develop, implement and oversee ICS’s strategic communications component, including defining goals, objectives and priorities. The position will take the current communications capacity to the next level and align with organizational goals and priorities. The position will be responsible for strengthening the visibility of ICS and the issues the organization addresses by developing and delivering timely strategic communications in print, social media, online and multimedia platforms. This position will be supervised by the Executive Director.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

PLANNING and STRATEGY
Lead ICS’s strategic communications vision, positioning and framing to help achieve our vision and movement goals
Connect ICS’s communications plan with development priorities to maximize resources to ICS
Develop and implement annual communications plans and goals
CAMPAIGN COMMUNICATIONS
Design and lead communications strategies, including developing framing and messaging, for multiple campaigns. Ensure alignment of campaign messages with overall organizational messages, values, principles and priorities
BRANDING/MARKETING
Strengthen ICS’s brand by building off unique attributes developed over 20 year history
Oversee development of organizational marketing materials
EARNED MEDIA
Manage and develop relationships with media outlets and reporters
Utilize news stories, op-eds, rapid letter responses, and story placement in key print and online media outlets to increase ICS’s visibility as a leader in the LA progressive movement
SOCIAL and DIGITAL MEDIA
Develop and manage a dynamic website and social media forums with compelling stories to draw in a diverse audience, including managing a website redesign process in the first six months;
SUPERVISION
Strengthen key infrastructure areas and capacities in communications
Supervise Communications Associate and manage communications consultants and vendors

Skills

Deep knowledge of progressive social justice issues; knowledge of community organizing in Los Angeles a plus;
Strong leadership and vision for a compelling communications strategy, for a grassroots organization;
Understand campaign strategy and how to develop strategic messaging and framing;
Great writer with the ability to create a compelling narrative arc;
Good visual design sense and ability to maintain brand consistency;
Able to meet deadlines, manage projects with many moving parts and attention to the details.

Requirements

BA/BS in Communications or related field, Masters preferred;
5+ years of experience in a management and communications position in a nonprofit enviroment.
