Summary Statement
The Residential Program provides nourishing and respectful structure to families who have experienced homelessness. We tailor prescriptive services for each family to provide them with the necessary support, education and skills to assist them in obtaining housing, employment and self-sufficiency. Families work directly with case managers and residential program staff to address individual barriers to homelessness in order to develop a long term plan for success. The Residential Counselor works under the supervision of the Residential Supervisor providing assistance for the orderly activity and progress of the residents through the routine at Raphael House.

KeyResponsibilities

    Establish and uphold the program routine:
Assist families in following the program (i.e. program policies and procedures) with clear expectations at a reasonable pace and in accordance with their own ability
Participate in department staff, supervision and support meetings to further the implementation of the program
Accurately record each family’s progress in accordance with the program, daily and nightly
Effectively and efficiently guide families through intakes & departures in coordination with case managers
Will proactively maintain on-going communication with Case Managers with regard to client functioning
Will know what constitutes formal Incident Reporting and will complete all paperwork and direct communications within the time expectatons
Will participate in Case Planning Meetings and Case Reviews if schedule permits.
Stay current with recent program activity
Be aware of the main focus of each particular time of day
Know where the families are at all times
Ensure that all children present in the house are constructively engaged in either staff supervised activities or in the care of their parents / approved parent partner.
Lead evening activities for toddler aged children
Organize evening activities for families on weekends
Be able to instruct and assist families in completion of their assigned household responsibilities

2. Provide active, positive supervision of all residents, modeling appropriate parental and neighborly behavior:
Interact directly with residents according to the established Raphael House philosophy and program standards
Recognize emotional and physical needs of residents and respond appropriately
Be sensitive of confidentiality and personal dignity when engaging residents in conversation; uphold confidentiality at all times

Be aware of your example to each family, as you work and interact with others in all of the varied activities throughout each day
Support fellow staff and all residents, rather than taking sides in a disagreement
Encourage reconciliation and constructive dialogue when in dispute, discourage gossip and complaints
Assist with children’s needs when parents appear overwhelmed

3. Maintain a safe and orderly environment:
Respond timely to crisis to alleviate the disorder and maintain the peace and safety of the household
Complete daily duties and short- and long-term projects in a timely and organized fashion
Follow Raphael House health, hygiene and safety guidelines.
Be familiar with and maintain the proper supply of hygiene, medical & cleaning supplies
Assist families in following the Monthly Extermination Procedure
Know the procedures for administering a drug test when required
Know the procedures for filing a Missing Person’s Report with the police when necessitated
Complete security rounds of residential areas
Prepare vacated residential rooms for intakes
Keep residential areas clean and presentable
Other duties as assigned

Flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of duties and projects, ensuring the smooth operation of the household and all programs
Team work with your supervisor, fellow staff, volunteers, parents and children is essential
Ability to be consistent, fair and open-minded
Ability to interact with other departments and assist with their needs
Ability to lift and move furniture up to 50 lbs
Ability to work several weekends a month; a flexible schedule is necessary
Ability to work with various cleaning products
Ability to assist with moderate to heavy cleaning

Qualifications
BA/BS in a social service related field preferred
2 years residential program experience preferred
Prior managerial/supervisory experience desirable
Conflict resolution experience
Bilingual in Spanish preferred
Computer literate: Word and Excel
