Political Director – AFSCME Local 3299

DESCRIPTION
AFSCME Local 3299 is a dynamic progressive labor union representing 24,000 University Service and Patient Care workers at the University of California. We are a member-driven union with rank and file leadership, dedicated to building a strong union to fight for our benefits, jobs and families.

We are currently seeking a Political Director based in our Central Headquarters in Oakland or our Sacramento office. The Director will be responsible for the Local’s Political Field and Legislative Program.

Responsibilities include:
Work with the Local’s Leadership to develop 3299’s legislative agenda.
Identify and analyze UC’s legislative agenda and budget process.
Build 3299’s member-driven field political program.
Train staff and member leaders in lobbying, electoral campaigns and political strategy.
Work closely with AFSCME California and AFSCME International on statewide and national political programs.
Build AFSCME 3299 PEOPLE, or voluntary political contribution, program.
Work with elected member leadership, senior leadership and staff in ongoing development and implementation of Local’s new vision and strategic plan.
Qualifications and Skills:
Strategic thinker, team builder
Experience with unions and social justice movements.
At least 3 years experience in building and leading a political program.
Familiarity with legislative process, California electoral process.
Excellent written and oral communications.
Knowledge of and experience with building member political field programs, field polling,
A demonstrated commitment to involving members in building political power and strategy.
A demonstrated commitment to justice for working families, quality and affordable public higher education and quality patient care.
A demonstrated commitment to union democracy and supporting and developing members’ leadership in their union.

Additional Requirements:
Extended day and occasional overnight travel, including frequent travel to Sacramento.
Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance with business coverage, and an automobile for business use.
Bilingual (Spanish, Cantonese/Mandarin, Hindi) preferred

Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)

Work is performed in a variety of employment settings. Driving, travel, temporary assignments, irregular and extended work hours are required.
