Human Resources Director
The Calhoun School is a progressive Pre-K through-12 day school on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Serving over 700 students in two classroom buildings (on 81st St. and West End Ave, and on 74th St. between Amsterdam and Columbus Aves), Calhoun is dedicated to nurturing a joy of learning through inquiry-based and student-centered instruction in its distinctive open classrooms. The Human Resources Director is a new position that will report directly to the Head of School and be responsible for the oversight and implementation of HR policies affecting approximately 175 full-time teachers, faculty and staff as well as an array of part-time and adjunct instructors and coaches. The Human Resources Director will design and implement strategy, policies and procedures to ensure that the school’s mission and values are upheld in its practices and people. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record as a human resources generalist with hands-on expertise in relationship management both internally with staff and colleagues as well as externally with candidates and vendors, and success in implementing and managing human resources best practices.

Responsibilities:
Articulate and support the strategic HR needs and goals of the school and manage and perform the human resources function accordingly.
Design and implement hiring procedures that best fit the school’s mission and conform with human resources best practices.
Introduce and manage a performance management review process for all employees, leading the effort for staff and administration while collaborating with Associate Head for Teaching and Learning to meet needs of the faculty.
Provide education in human resources best practices for managers and supervisors.
Serve as a resource for managers supervising employees with performance issues; document all matters as appropriate.
Articulate and review compensation strategies and benchmarks for faculty, staff and administrators.
In collaboration with the Director of Finance, review and advise on structure of all HR policies and benefits, including leading a comprehensive and ongoing review of the Employee Handbook.
Review and oversee all paid leave policies, manage workers’ compensation, FMLA and other leaves respecting both the needs of the employee and those of the school.
Supervise, mentor and work collaboratively with the Payroll and Benefits Coordinator; ensure compliance with payroll laws and regulations including the ACA.
Serve as a forceful champion for fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion.
Oversee systems – including PAYCOM – used to manage HR functions, and advise on new systems as required.
Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations governing human resources, including but not limited to ADA, EEO, FMLA, PFL, etc.
Provide risk management support in the event of employee claims; conduct investigations and write reports as appropriate.
Manage staff recognition events for service and retirement.
Complete government reports and surveys.
Manage the school’s risk by overseeing and documenting appropriate employee training, consulting on insurance and crisis management procedures and coverage.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible human resources experience.
Bachelor’s degree and professional certification (SHRM, HCRI) required; advanced degree preferred.
Experience in a non-profit organization of comparable scale required; experience in private education (independent school or small college) strongly preferred.
A self-starter with a well-developed collaborative work style and an aptitude for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
A process-focused hands-on attitude matched to the requirements of creating a new position.
Demonstrated ability to manage change.
Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, judgement, initiative and a strong sense of humor.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated aptitude for managing employee relations.
Ability to work with highly sensitive material while maintaining the strictest level of confidentiality at all times.
