Housekeeping Associate – Hostelling International

POSITION PURPOSE:
Housekeepers are responsible for keeping the hostel neat, clean, and safe. All staff meets and mixes with
guests on-the-job and need to have customer service skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS~
Candidates need to be willing to follow a designated “cleaning routine”. This includes vacuuming, general
cleaning, making beds, cleaning bathrooms, doing laundry, light maintenance, dishwashing and cleaning the
kitchen plus general hostel & grounds cleanup, etc… Housekeepers should have high standards of cleanliness,
be observant about “seeing dirt” and clutter, and enjoy this type of physical work. This is a very high energy job
so housekeepers must be able to be very active.
A typical day is a 5 to 8 hour shift. You need to be neat in your own personal appearance and a natural
organizer. Work both independently and on a team depending on the task. Hostel team members need to be
physically strong to help with carrying linen and supplies up and down one flight of stairs and climb up ladders to
make top-bunks.
o Clean and prepare guestrooms, dorms, common areas, and bathrooms
o Stock housekeeping bucket/closets with supplies
o Follow trained procedures of chemical use and room cleaning
o Report necessary maintenance repairs
o Report unsafe and hazardous conditions
o Comply with the established housekeeping policies and procedures
o Assist in other duties as assigned by the supervisor
o Report lost and found, damage, or missing items immediately
o Bring soiled linen to the laundry
o Thorough cleaning using chemicals daily
o Clean and restock your supplies at the end of the day
o Ability to maintain an inventory of items needed for cleaning position
o Ability to order supplies as needed as to not run out
o Deep cleaning as needed
o Able to work independently and on a team
o Flexible with schedule as needed (must be able to work any day of the week)
o Completes deep cleaning checklist to insure operational consistency
o Cross training and work in alternative departments if needed
o Work with Front Desk staff to complete daily cleaning
o Ability to cover front desk for lunch breaks (includes answering guest questions, answering phones,
making reservations, checking guests in and out)

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY~
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate
that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using
some other combination of skills and abilities.
o Recent professional housekeeping experience preferred
o Must be detail-oriented, outgoing, and energetic
o Ability to perform housekeeping activities within shift hours
o Ability to speak with venders to acquire supplies or service equipment
o Needs to be physically able to get down on hands and knees and climb ladders
o Knowledge of laundry cleaning procedures
o Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies
o Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures
o Ability to stay focused on housekeeping duties and continue cleaning while enjoying interacting with
people
o Ability to learn a computerized property management system
o Ability to answer phones, make reservations, and do checkouts during front desk lunch break

General Manager

Hours:
o 20 to 40hrs per week (subject to change)
o Shifts are 6hrs give or take depending on work load
o Shifts start at 6:45am

Compensation:
o $10.25 per hour
o Part time Medical, Dental, Vacation, and Sick time after 60 days
