The Friends of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Inc, a nationally recognized and award winning refuge support organization, seeks a highly motivated and qualified individual to be its next Executive Director. This position is responsible for the leadership, management and general administration of the Friends in partnership with the Board of Directors and the Refuge.

As Executive Director you will be responsible for:

Leadership

Be the primary spokesperson for the Friends, representing it to the public, to members, and to other organizations.
Partner with the Board of Directors in developing and implementing the Friends vision and strategic plans.
Foster effective teamwork among the Board, Friends staff, and Refuge staff.

Operational Planning & Management

Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization.
Coordinate the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Friends programs and projects to ensure they meet the objectives of the Friends and the needs of the Refuge.
Provide oversight for the financial operations of the Friends, working effectively with the organization’s bookkeepers, accountants and auditors, and ensuring that Generally Accepted Accounting Principles are followed.
Support fundraising activities of the Friends as appropriate.
Develop the organization’s annual budget and ensure its proper execution after Board approval.

Personnel Management

Work with the Board to determine Friends staffing needs, and assist in recruiting and selecting high quality individuals to help further the mission of the Friends.
Supervise and mentor staff, including implementing an effective performance management system, and ensuring a positive, healthy and safe work environment.

Communications

Communicate with stakeholders, including members, donors, community groups, elected officials, and the general public, keeping them informed of the work of the organization.
Serve as a communications link with Refuge staff, ensuring that all Friends activities are appropriately coordinated with Refuge operations.
Support the production of high quality Friends publications in both electronic and print media.

Qualifications:
Education/Experience

Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree
Three years of experience in a management or administrative leadership position with a non-profit organization or similar enterprise.

Required Skills

Demonstrated ability to lead others, to supervise effectively the work of others, to foster teamwork, and to interact professionally with co-workers, employees, managers, internal and external visitors, and customers.
Demonstrated ability and experience in planning, budgeting, prioritizing tasks, taking initiative, organizing tasks, assuming responsibility for projects from inception to completion, evaluating results, and solving problems with minimal supervision.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated capability and experience in the use of modern information technology tools, including: word processing; database/spreadsheet management; electronic mail; development and editing of print publications; and preparation of presentation materials.

Desired Skills

Experience working with others on successful fundraising efforts such as: grant application, administration and reporting; planning and implementing large-scale campaigns; developing donor contact strategies; etc.
Proficiency with some or all of the following computer applications: QuickBooks (or other accounting software); Adobe Dreamweaver (or other Web Page editing/management application); Adobe Photoshop; Adobe In-Design; Microsoft Publisher; and Microsoft PowerPoint.
Experience with the administrative and fiscal issues associated with operating a 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization.

About the Friends of the Bosque del Apache NWR

The Friends of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission of the Friends is to support Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, and to promote appreciation and conservation of wildlife and habitat through environmental education and natural history experiences at the Refuge. The Friends has over 1,000 members across the country and abroad, and operates the Bosque Nature Store in the Refuge Visitor Center as an income generator and outreach tool. The Friends also operates the Festival of the Cranes each November for outreach and education purposes. In the past ten years, the Friends has administered $870,000 in grants alone. These grants, combined with donations and Friends funds, total more than $1.1 million exclusively for Refuge projects. For the last three years, the Friends has partnered with the Refuge for an intensive environmental education program focusing on the ecosystems of Bosque Del Apache called ‘Every Child Outside Learning About Bosque’ (ECOLAB). Location

The office for the Executive Director of the Friends is located near the Visitor Center, on the grounds of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, 1001 Hwy 1, San Antonio, New Mexico. The Refuge is 19 miles south of Socorro, NM, and 96 miles south of Albuquerque, NM.
