Fort Mason Center (FMC) is a unique community destination, hosting arts and cultural events, organizations, and programs in historic buildings and piers along San Francisco’s northern waterfront. In operation since 1977, the nonprofit Fort Mason Center is an extraordinary example of repurposing former military land and buildings for contemporary uses, including museums, performance spaces, and a vibrant schedule of art and cultural exhibitions and events. Located just inside San Francisco Bay, Fort Mason Center is part of the National Park Service’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Fort Mason Center is a national historic landmark.

Overview

The Event Supervisor (On-Call) supports Fort Mason Center’s larger campus events. FMC seeks a qualified individual who has exemplary customer service skills, ability to problem-solve, enjoys working in a diverse environment, and can demonstrate tact and diplomacy in difficult situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide logistical support for events taking place in the Herbst and Festival Pavilions
Proactively work to ensure that clients have a positive experience at Fort Mason Center
Oversee safety of guests, vendors, and staff, working with clients to correct unsafe situations as needed
Monitor load-in, event, and load-out ensuring that rules are followed and approved floorplans are enforced
Troubleshoot facility and personnel issues as they arise
Continually survey piers, parking lots, and resident buildings for negative impact. Assure rapid emergency response when/if required
Advise clients and vendors regarding alcohol consumption regulations on campus including adherence to the alcohol permits time line
Act as the liaison between key vendors, being the conduit of communication between the client and our contractors
Supervise service contractors (janitorial, security, parking, etc.) confirming hours worked and delegating tasks as necessary
Communicate the activities of the day, via written notes
Oversee the locking/unlocking of event spaces as required.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum three (3) years experience in coordinating events and working with staff, vendors, clients, and other participants
Experience working with large groups (1000+), including experience in safety and crowd control issues
Calm under pressure; ability to direct staff, guests, and vendors in a level-headed manner in an emergency situation
Customer-service oriented
Organized, detail-oriented; demonstrated maturity in judgment and actions
Excellent verbal communication skills; tact and diplomacy in dealing with people and handling difficult situations
Basic computer skills required

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds and stand for long periods of time

This is an on-call position that fluctuates with the event season. Hours are not guaranteed, but during low season, one could expect five (5) shifts and during high season it could be as many as 12–15.
