DESCRIPTION
OVERVIEW
South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change. Its mission is to prepare youth to succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,100 boys and girls annually through programming on the field and in the classroom, including academic enrichment and tutoring, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness, immigration legal services, and other individual and family supports. The majority of youth served are from immigrant families and many were board outside of the country. While the South Bronx has the nation’s highest poverty rate and low educational outcomes, SBU makes a significant difference in the lives of its youth. In the last five years, 100% of youth in the organization’s core program, the SBU Academy, have graduated high school, 92% have graduated in four years, and 94% have gone on to attend college.

South Bronx United seeks a Director of Soccer Programs to coordinate soccer programming, coaching, and logistics, including the SBU Travel and Select Soccer, Recreational Soccer Program, and City in the Community afterschool program. The position will support coaches and coach-mentors in providing quality soccer programming that is developmentally appropriate and aligned with the specific program’s goals. The position will also ensure that soccer programming supports the organization’s educational and youth development goals and policies.

The Director will work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and soccer coaches within the overall mission of the organization to impact youth outcomes and organization development. This position reports to the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Coordinate soccer activities for SBU.
• Manage training and game activities schedules, particularly for Travel and Select Soccer programs.
• Coordinate coach and volunteer coverage.
• Support program expectations and SBU Academy student policies, working closely with program staff to ensure values are reinforced on the field.
• Manage Recreational Soccer programming and staff
• Provide coaching coverage, supervision, and partner coordination for CITC afterschool program.
• Coordinate and deliver soccer programming during Summer Soccer Scholars
• Plan and run special Soccer events.
• Serve as primary contact for all soccer activities and soccer-related issues.

2. Support coaches and coach-mentors in providing quality soccer programming that is developmentally appropriate and aligned with the specific program’s goals.
• Develop, update, and facilitate the implementation of soccer curriculum for each program.
• Hold regular coach trainings and individual meetings for travel and select coaches.
• Hold periodic recreational volunteer coach training and provide ongoing support (by phone/email).
• Work individually with coaches on development, including observations and support at trainings and games.
• Work with young leaders on building coaching and refereeing experience.
• Support coaches and coach-mentors in upholding program expectations, with program’s academic and character development goals in mind.
• Ensure coaches receive access to coach education opportunities.

3. Handle operations and logistics for soccer programs
• Apply, Review, and Manage Field Permits.
• Communicate the schedule and calendar to staff, coaches, parents, and youth.
• Manage and organization soccer equipment and storage.
• Manage recruitment and communication for soccer programs.
• Coordinate transportation, field setup, and other logistics for travel games.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
The Director of Soccer Operations should have the following background:
• Bachelors Degree
• At least three years of experience in soccer, youth development, or sports management
• At least three years coaching experience
• Experience working with or mentoring coaches and/or running coach trainings
• Appropriate coaching licensure
• Knowledge of college soccer and the soccer recruitment process is a plus.
• Experience and culture sensitivity in working with youth from diverse backgrounds
• Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings and understanding of individuals of all backgrounds
• Excellent interpersonal, mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment and with a young, developing nonprofit organization
• Flexible and adaptable to work in a variety of settings
• Strong administrative, computer, and organization skills
• Familiarity with the South Bronx community or other neighboring communities is preferred
• Spanish and/or French proficiency is a plus

TIME
Full-time, requires regular weekend and evening hours in alignment with soccer programming

COMPENSATION
Base $40,000
