THE OPPORTUNITY

The development manager position is a great opportunity for the right candidate to join an energetic and collaborative team during an exciting time of change and growth for Breakthrough. The development manager is a key staff person who is highly involved in all aspects of the Development Department of the national office, including supporting and managing projects across a broad scope of development, communications, and events efforts. The majority of the development manager’s time will be focused on identifying, soliciting, and stewarding Breakthrough’s foundation, corporate, and individual donors. Candidates should embrace a creative and innovative approach to development. The position reports to the chief development officer, but also works closely with the executive director, and communications and finance teams. The development manager’s work is critical to the success of Breakthrough’s overall efforts to improve educational opportunity in this country, and we’re looking for a dynamic, passionate, and thoughtful team member to help propel our work forward.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Management. Serves as the primary writer on all grant proposals, requests, and reports to foundations. Manages the grant submission process, including collection and synthesis of data, completion of proposals, tracking, reporting, and corresponding with foundation and corporate donors. Develops and maintains an annual schedule of letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports, tracking outcomes and updating the calendar on a regular basis. Builds a pipeline of prospective funders by researching and identifying new grant prospects. Works with national program staff to ensure accurate information is transmitted in all funder communications.

Donor Stewardship and Solicitation. Regularly researches and identifies foundation, corporate, and individual prospects at all giving levels. Assists the chief development officer and executive director in developing engagement strategies for current and potential foundation and individual donors. Supports strategic donor outreach and communications, and maintains regular correspondence with key funding representatives. Assists the communications team in the development of engaging funder collateral.

Data Management. Takes primary responsibility for the organization’s development database, developing strategies for its use and ensuring regular, accurate updating and report generation. Analyzes and shares fundraising data with internal and external audiences to empower informed decision making on fundraising prospects and strategies.

Special Event Management. Assists in developing the strategy, manages the logistics, and executes all activities for Breakthrough’s annual fundraising gala and other donor cultivation events. This includes drafting event agendas, preparing invitation lists, researching and reserving venues, coordinating arrangements with hosts as applicable, receiving responses, and collecting all other Breakthrough materials needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Dedication to Breakthrough’s dual mission of increasing teacher quality and college access for low-income students
A minimum of three years development experience, including grant writing
Experience successfully fundraising from both institutional funders and individuals
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with foundation and individual donors
Computer literacy, including experience and proficiency with donor databases and office productivity software
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and complete projects successfully as planned
Ability to work with diverse constituents, both internally and externally
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Strong, persuasive writing skills
Bachelor’s degree

Desired

Experience in or significant knowledge of education-related nonprofit organizations
Familiarity and/or experience with the national education funder community
Knowledge of the San Francisco Bay Area philanthropic community
Proficiency with the Salesforce CRM platform
Event production and coordination experience
