The mission of the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women. Founded in 1978, DWC was the first organization to exclusively serve mentally ill and elderly homeless women on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. DWC now provides permanent supportive housing to 119 women with special needs who were once without a home, along with a wide range of drop-in support resources. Job Description

DWC is seeking a highly personable, compassionate, and team-oriented person to provide direct services and kitchen support for our drop-in Day Center program. The Day Center is staffed seven days per week (Mon-Fri 6am-4pm & Sat-Sun 7am-3pm) to provide supportive services to homeless and low-income women in the community. This position will be responsible for the management of the Day Center, including identifying program needs, coordinating services and activities, donation management, crisis intervention, and assisting the meals program. The Day Center Manager will work closely with participants, volunteers and staff to provide services and ensure a safe and welcoming environment. This position reports directly to the Associate Director Day Center Programs.

Job Duties

Assist with management of daily Day Center operations, including set up, clean up, implementation and oversight of activities
Provide direct services to 200+ participants daily, including sign-up for showers, case management, referrals, and basic needs such as clothing, food, and laundry
Take a Trauma Informed Care approach by prioritizing safety, empowering participants, and ensuring that the enforcement of rules has minimal re-traumatizing effects
Ensure a welcoming environment: greet participants, guests and visitors, respond to requests, address complaints, de-escalate problematic situations, provide support to staff, problem-solve issues in a proactive and timely manner, and ensure structure and safety in the Day Center
Assist with meal preparation and service of three meals a day (approx. 100+ women/meal)
Ensure in-kind donations are received, stored, and organized following organization policy, as well as distributed to participants when appropriate
Train and mentor participants, interns and volunteers in the provision of services; identify and assign projects and tasks where volunteers and interns can be utilized
Provide administrative support such as managing sign ins, tracking, and data entry as needed
Plan and coordinate enrichment activities with the Day Center participants
Other duties as assigned to support the mission of the organization

Necessary Skills/Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in a multi-service agency a plus
Knowledge of issues related to women’s poverty, homelessness, mental illness, trauma, substance abuse, health issues, and older adults preferred
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage a diverse group of participants, interns, and volunteers
Ability to exercise and model good judgment, especially in crisis situations
Proficiency in HMIS and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Must possess strong written and oral communication skills
Detail-oriented, highly organized, able to manage multiple tasks and priorities, and set and meet goals and deadlines

Schedule & Salary: This is a permanent, part-time, non-exempt position. Schedule: 24-28 hours per week as follows: Tue: 12:30-4:30pm, Thurs: 12:30-4:30pm, Sat: 7:00am-3:30pm, Sun: 7:00am-3:30pm and 4 hours per month for staff meetings; with flexibility to work evenings and holidays when necessary.
