Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus (“Advancing Justice-ALC”), a San Francisco-based civil rights organization, is a leader in defending the interests of low-income and vulnerable Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the Bay Area and nationally. Since 1972, we have litigated high-profile cases and engaged in community education and empowerment, policy advocacy, and direct client representation. We are currently at 27 staff. Our program areas include national security civil rights, immigration, housing rights, criminal justice reform, workers’ rights, and ASPIRE. Advancing Justice-ALC is a founder of the national Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation with partners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, DC.

Position Summary: Advancing Justice-ALC seeks a Workers’ Rights Staff Attorney to advocate for the rights of low-income immigrant workers, particularly those from underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Significant experience in the field of immigrant workers’ rights is highly desired.

Responsibilities:

Provide a range of legal services from counseling to direct representation for low-wage workers on wage and hour, race and national origin discrimination, NLRA, and other labor and employment cases in the administrative context
Build and litigate impact cases, including class actions, in state and federal court
Engage in public policy advocacy to advance pro-worker agenda on local, state, or federal levels
Conduct community education and outreach
Supervise community advocate, law clerks, and other volunteers
Report to the Litigation Director

Qualifications:

B.A./B.S. and J.D. degrees with membership in good standing with the California State Bar
Minimum of three years related legal services or state/federal court litigation experience, including taking and defending depositions, law and motion work, and discovery, ideally with familiarity in practicing in a non-profit organization
Substantive law experience in workers’ rights or a relevant area such as immigrant rights, civil rights or constitutional law
Highly motivated and self-starting
Detail-oriented and ability to multi-task
Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills
Ability to work with a highly diverse group of mission-driven lawyers and staff with a range of substantive law knowledge, experience, and expertise
Demonstrated leadership and ability to work independently and in collaboration with other attorneys, community advocates, and community-based organizations
Demonstrated commitment to advancing the rights of low-income, API, people of color, immigrant, and/or worker communities
Preferred experience in supervising non-attorney staff
Preferred bilingual skills in Asian or Pacific Islander languages
