Venture Development Manager, Health Care – Laura and John Arnold Foundation – Houston, TX

The Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF) is a private foundation whose core objective is to address our nation’s most pressing and persistent challenges using evidence-based, multi-disciplinary approaches. LJAF strives to create functional solutions that target the root causes, not just the symptoms, of these problems. The solutions must be both scalable nationally and sustainable without permanent philanthropy.

Position: Venture Development Manager – Health Care

As a part of LJAF’s Venture Development department, we are building a small team focused on improving the U.S. health care system. We are seeking a Manager of Venture Development – Health Care who will be responsible for identifying, analyzing, and pursuing new, high-leverage philanthropic opportunities to positively transform health care. To date, LJAF’s Health Care work has largely focused on supporting cost containment efforts, but our strategy remains in development. The Manager of Venture Development – Health Care will play a key role in defining and implementing LJAF’s strategic plan for philanthropic investment within the sector.

Core Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Venture Development team to refine and communicate LJAF’s Health Care strategy
Develop a pipeline of high-leverage philanthropic opportunities: research, vet, and present grant proposals to LJAF’s Board for approval
Draft grant agreements, including detailed budgets, timelines, and milestones
Manage charitable investments approved by LJAF’s Board, which will include working with grantees to establish performance metrics, monitoring their performance, and measuring their impact
Build and manage a network of relationships with new and existing grantees, experts, and key stakeholders
Provide general operational and administrative support for proposal and grant management
Collaborate with LJAF staff to explore and develop cross-initiative charitable investment opportunities

Essential Skills, Experience, Qualities, and Abilities:

Bachelor’s or advanced degree(s) in economics, healthy policy, public policy, health care administration, or a related field (preferred)
Familiarity with the U.S. health care system and a desire to improve it
Strong quantitative and qualitative research capabilities
Ability to understand and communicate technical and theoretical concepts
Strategic, entrepreneurial approach to developing ideas and designing solutions
Ability to effectively prioritize projects, work simultaneously on multiple ventures, and meet deadlines
Positive, professional, team-oriented, and mission-driven
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated experience in research, writing, editing, and presenting
Proactive and open to embracing new challenges
