UAEM Advocacy Campaign Leader Internship – Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) – Washington, DC

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is offering a summer internship position for two students interested in learning about global access to essential medicine issues while having the ability to contribute to the day-to-day functions of a growing non-profit organization. UAEM is a non-profit student-led organization working with universities to change the way in which medical discoveries are patented and licensed with pharmaceutical companies, in order to ensure that medicines are accessible around the world and not priced out of the reach of those who need them.

The interns will learn about UAEM’s campaign work involving subjects such as global health, intellectual property, human rights and policy research, as well as non-profit development, communications, event planning, and organizing at university campuses for social change.This internship is ideal for anyone with a strong interest in learning how to lead an advocacy campaign to produce social change.

Reports to:Executive Director, Campus Campaigns Organizer

Type of position:Intern, modest stipend available

Time Commitment:16 – 20 hrs/week

Duration:10 weeks

Location:Washington, DC or remote

Duties:The advocacy campaign leader intern will work closely with UAEM staff – in particular with the Executive Director, the Development Officer and the Campus Campaign Organizer. The intern will engage in advocacy training as well as help build a major campaign for UAEM.

Participate in advocacy training modules

Work with staff and students to build support and activity for a UAEM campaign

Support advocacy initiatives as they arise which includes conducting phone or Skype meetings with potential allies.

Gather any necessary research that must be done to build an advocacy campaign

Skills: Applicants should have:

Relevant experience in organizing student groups and a technical field such as medicine, science and/or global health

Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills

Strong research skills and proficiency in drawing relevant information from highly technical content.

Strong critical thinking ability

Full command of Microsoft Office suite of products;

Commitment to the public interest, with an interest in medical humanitarian aid and the struggle for access to essential medicines in developing countries

Preferred:

Experience with leading an advocacy campaign

Additional Information: Given the part time nature of this internship, there is a preference for students who are based in the DC metro area where the UAEM office is located. However, exceptional candidates from across the country will be considered. This is a 10 week summer internship position to be completed during the 2015 summer term. A minimum of 16-20 hours of work per week will be expected.
