Shelter Advocate – YWCA Silicon Valley – San Jose, CA

A well-established non-profit organization is seeking a highly motivated individual with a high level of self-awareness, emotional intelligence and demonstrated strength-based leadership skills to join our passionate and dynamic team dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. This individual should possess demonstrated ability working with culturally and economically diverse individuals and families. In addition, this individual should be able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment and be able to respond appropriately to unexpected situations.

TheShelter Advocate provides peer counseling, crisis and case management, community referrals and domestic violence education to individuals and families residing in the YWCA Silicon Valley’s confidential emergency domestic violence shelter and housing programs. The Shelter Advocate shall communicate survivor needs to the team and monitor non-compliance of shelter guidelines. The Shelter Advocate shall respond to safety threats, conflicts and crisis situations.

The Shelter Advocate supports activities related to:

Basic site maintenance
Client accompaniment
Coordination of daily operations
Conflict resolution
Crisis management
Distribution of food and supplies
Direct advocacy and
Room readiness

We require:

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s Degree in a social services field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Prior advocacy-based counseling, case management or residential experience is a plus.

Candidates should be competent in using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and have experience in confidential data management and record keeping.

Bilingual, bi-cultural and bi-literate skills are highly preferred but not required.
