Public Affairs Specialist – National Trust for Historic Preservation – Washington, DC

We are seeking a talented and creative communications & media relations specialist to fill a Manager of Public Affairs opening. The Manager of Public Affairs plays a key role in reputation management for the National Trust in a very active department. He/she will be responsible for conducting outreach in four primary areas of our Public Affairs work: National Treasures, digital public relations, H.O.P.E. Crew promotion and diversity in preservation. Note that while the positions carries a Manager title and does manage public affairs campaigns it does not oversee any direct reports.

To support the Trust’s focus on National Treasures, this position will conduct public affairs activities for a select portfolio of National Treasures, including developing key messages and press materials, promoting events, and landing media coverage for assigned Treasures projects. This position will also provide ‘swing’ media support to the public affairs team for additional National Treasures in major media campaigns.

The Manager of Public Affairs facilitates digital media outreach by contributing to content development across the National Trust’s channels for pitches to the media about Trust campaigns. The Manager of Public Affairs also builds and manages relationships for content-sharing, online advocacy and promotion of the Trust’s programs with culturally and ethnically diverse outlets, especially those in Latino communities.

The Manager of Public Affairs serves as a specialist in reaching younger audiences and activists and broadening awareness of the Trust’s programs with young people. This includes the Trust’s premier H.O.P.E. (Hands-On Preservation Experience) Crew Program that trains young people in preservation crafts while helping to protect historic cultural sites on public lands. This position manages national and local communications for this program in coordination with Trust’s Community Outreach Department, and with program partners such as The Corps Network and government agencies. The Manager of Public Affairs is responsible for maximizing media opportunities for the Trust’s on-the-ground H.O.P.E. Crew activities as well as feature opportunities with the national media.

Saving diverse places is a National Trust priority. The Manager of Public Affairs works to engage culturally and ethnically diverse audiences, constituents and partners, particularly within the Latino community, in our work. The Manager of Public Affairs garners media coverage at diversity outlets for Trust programs. This position reports to the Director of Public Affairs and requires a very organized and independent public affairs strategist with strong writing, media, advocacy and digital media skills who excels at cross collaboration with other departments.

Duties

Manage public affairs and press outreach for select National Treasures, crafting key messages, press releases and statements.
Work with digital content and social media teams to disseminate National Treasures news and other Trust news.
Garner media placements and digital engagement for assigned National Treasure accounts.
Craft and pitch story ideas and write/edit press materials for news outlets, blogs and online media for assigned National Treasures, youth-oriented programs such as H.O.P.E. Crew and other campaigns at the National Trust.
Cultivate bloggers, media partnerships and content-sharing from a wide array of sources to reach local preservationists.
Manage support for National Treasures work, particularly building visibility within Latino, as well as Asian American, African American, Native American and other diverse communities.
Participate actively as a brand ambassador for the National Trust on personal social channels.

Qualifications

At least 5 years of overall experience, including at least 2-3 years working on national level communications campaigns in a public affairs setting. Experience working in a matrixed and geographically dispersed non-profit or for a PR agency preferred.
Demonstrated success with national media placements, cultivating journalists and bloggers and placing stories.
Expertise developing content and reporter pitches using online and digital platforms.
Keen interest in the convergence of news, digital media and public affairs.
Experience managing multiple projects and working in cross-functional teams.
Experience working with federal agencies; volunteer youth corps and networks a plus.
Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization.
Intermediate project-management skills, including project and vendor budgeting and planning.
Proven ability to collaborate across departments to implement processes and achieve results with only general supervision. Track record of building and maintaining productive relationships with multiple stakeholders, including the media.
Strong writing, communications, presentation, digital and interpersonal skills.
Experience in marketing to and engaging culturally and ethnically diverse audiences, constituents and partners, particularly within the Latino community. Ties to Latino or other diverse affinity groups and professional organizations are preferred.
Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish as well as English is preferred.
Experience successfully managing internal stakeholders and relationships essential.
Ability to think creatively and execute campaigns. Entrepreneurial spirit and skill set essential.
Ability to prioritize, multi-task and follow-up effectively and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion, meeting time sensitive deadlines.
Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment.
Proven ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing digital technology and communications best practices.
Strong experience using MS Office products, as well as social media related tools and software.
Undergraduate degree (or comparable work experience) in journalism
