Parent Organizer – InnerCity Struggle – Los Angeles, CA

Position Summary: The Parent Organizers for the Best Start East LA Partnership (Partnership) will work to recruit, strengthen leadership, build awareness and connect families to resources, and to create community change through a collective impact approach. We are seeking an energetic, experienced Community Organizer to work with parents and community members in East Los Angeles to implement leadership assessment of parent leaders, conduct one-on-one’s, house meeting and implement a robust parent leadership curriculum.

While employed by InnerCity Sruggle (2.5) and Proyecto Pastoral (1), the organizers work closely and are also accountable to the Partnership and Promesa BH core partners. Please see end of document for a more detail description of organizations.

Primary responsibilities include:

Identify, recruit and develop parent leaders, including:
Conducting outreach at Eastside schools, public places, churches and clinics in the Best Start ELA target area
Recruiting leaders and connecting with parents through one-on-ones, presentations and house meetings.
Preparing and conducting trainings using Popular Education methodologies.

Develop and build an active and strong membership base, including:
Coordinating monthly leadership meetings.
Coordinating monthly General Membership meetings with parent leaders.
Facilitating meetings, coordinating events and collaborating on organizational events.

Participate in curriculum development and training facilitation:

Conducting leadership assessment to determine training needs.
Facilitate workshops, presentations.
Prepare curriculums, design workshops guides and conduct evaluations.Support in the design and implementation of the Parent Leadership Academy, System Navigator, and Peer Educator strategies.
Identify community resource information to provide to Parent Leaders and other audiences as needed.
Implement all activities using a focus on building a relationship and strengthening social connections among participants, organizations, and partners.
Stay informed and foster relationships to collaborate and/or leverage efforts with other local efforts. Connect Parent Leaders to resources and other civic engagement opportunities as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Required

Minimum 2 years experience in community organizing.
Commitment to social justice.
Experience with popular education methodologies.
A team player who is able to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of computer programs preferred (Microsoft Office, Graphics/Layout programs).
College graduate preferred.
Able to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends.
Licensed driver with reliable transportation and ability to meet organization’s minimum auto insurance requirements.
Must be bilingual English/Spanish with fluent conversational ability in Spanish.
Interested in someone that can start immediately and can commit to position for at least two years.

Desirable

Experience in relational organizing methods.
Understanding of adult education principles.
Understanding of early education, parental stressors, and public social services systems.
Ability to work effectively with school administration and public agencies.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
Past participation with Best Start ELA and/or lived experience in East Los Angeles is a definite plus.
