SANCTUARY MANAGER

Hiring Organization: Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary provides lifetime care to New World monkeys from diverse backgrounds and includes monkeys retired from university research programs, ex-pet monkeys, and monkeys confiscated by government authorities. Monkeys living at Jungle Friends include capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, marmosets, and tamarins. Jungle Friends is licensed by the USDA and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, and is a member of the North American Association of Primate Sanctuaries. Monkeys living at Jungle Friends enjoy species-appropriate housing that includes outside naturalistic habitats.

Position Description:

Sanctuary Managers at Jungle Friends work together to oversee the care provided to 300 New World monkeys. Sanctuary Managers supervise caregiver staff, interns and volunteers, and work directly with the Executive Director, Veterinary staff, and Sanctuary Director to ensure 1) a high standard of care is provided to each resident monkey 2) monkey habitats and sanctuary facilities are maintained and 3) the sanctuary complies with all accreditation standards as well as state and federal regulations.

Duties include:

Communicate to the Executive Director, Veterinary staff, and Sanctuary Director all primate care and sanctuary facility needs that arise.
Train and supervise primate caregiver staff, prepare staff schedules, prioritize staff duties, and conduct staff meetings.
Monitor health and well-being of resident monkeys to ensure a high standard of care is provided.
Perform primate caregiver duties as needed.
Plan and monitor monkey socializations
Ensure recordkeeping duties are completed.
Construct new habitats.
Perform general maintenance and repair to sanctuary buildings and grounds.
Teach visitors to the sanctuary about the ecology and behavior of each species and describe the life-histories of resident monkeys.
Participate in fundraising campaigns, outreach and advocacy for captive primates.

The work is labor intensive and the Florida climate is very hot and humid in the summer. In the winter, temperatures can drop to the 20s, and shared duties include heater checks throughout the night during freezing temperatures. The work is difficult and can be stressful, but the rewards are great!

Qualifications/Experience: You must have experience working with animals and live on-site. We are looking for healthy, highly motivated, Sanctuary Managers to ensure each monkey receives a high standard of care. You must be friendly, even-tempered, have good communication skills, work well with others, and have the ability to lead, as well as follow.

Salary/funding: This is a salaried position. Salary is to be determined based on level of experience.

Accommodations: On-site accommodations include a private bedroom and bathroom. For the safety of the monkeys and co-workers smoking is prohibited at the sanctuary. We promote vegetarianism/veganism. Residents of the sanctuary are expected to prepare meals on-site accordingly. Communal meals at the sanctuary are vegan.

Term of Appointment: This is a permanent position. There is a 90-day probation period. A minimum commitment of one-year is requested.
