Health Center Advocate – Intern Position

To empower individuals to make independent, informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives, we provide information and health care, and promote public policies that make those services available to all. Planning is power.

PPNYC is seeking a Health Center Advocacy Internto work within the Public Affairs Department and at our centers in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and The Bronx. Health Center Advocates help support our city-wide Health Center Advocacy Program (HCAP), an initiative aimed at strengthening the PPNYC community by engaging patients in all of the work we do at PPNYC, beyond our health centers.

Duties:

Health Center Advocates help raise awareness about PPNYC’s education programs and advocacy initiatives, have conversations about reproductive health, rights, and justice, and offer the tools for patients to empower themselves and elevate their own voices.

Table in our health center waiting room, during weekday or weekend shifts, and engage people as they wait for their appointment
Inform people by sharing information on PPNYC’s programs, educational materials, advocacy opportunities, and upcoming local events
Answer questions and direct people to additional resources
Encourage people to get involved by becoming new supporters, activists, and volunteers

Qualifications:

Must have commitment to and strong interest in reproductive health, rights, and justice advocacy
Must have warm, calm, sensitive and personable approach
Must strictly adhere to patient privacy regulations and be able to discreetly handle confidential information
Must be able to work with and relate to people of multiple backgrounds
Must be at least 18 years of age
Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required

Requirements:

Minimum time-commitment of 8 hours per week
Must complete a Health Center Advocacy Training provided by PPNYC Public Affairs staff
Health assessment administered by your own physician, including a routine physical exam, tuberculosis testing (PPD) and current MMR immunization
