Hospitality Manager – Occidental Arts and Ecology Center – Occidental, CA

The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) is seeking a full-time Hospitality Manager to join our diverse operations management staff. This is a non-residential position.

OAEC is a non-profit educational and advocacy institute working in the areas of ecology, watershed restoration, horticulture, the arts and social justice activism. OAEC is located on an 80-acre retreat facility, with an intentional community, 65 miles north of San Francisco in western Sonoma County, California (

Job Summary

The Hospitality Manager will be in charge of OAEC’s Hospitality Department, including managing all of OAEC housekeeping duties (cleaning, care and beautification of OAEC’s buildings and guest facilities), guest services and hourly staff within the department. The Hospitality Manager will participate in Operations Department meetings with other OAEC Operations managers (i.e. Facilities, Kitchen, and Administration), as well as participate in the Staff Collective around overall management of OAEC’s program and budget. The Hospitality Manager is accountable to the Operations Director, and to the OAEC staff as a whole through her/his annual Work Plan and Performance Review.


Housekeeping -To manage all Housekeeping duties related to OAEC facilities including (but not limited to) guest accommodations and other site buildings:

Oversee and execute the routine cleaning and preparedness of both the inside and outside of many of OAEC’s buildings including all offices, guest accommodations, dormitories, intern cabins, community bath houses and bathrooms, meeting rooms, and other outdoor public areas including the gardens, kitchen and pond.
Manage all guest room scheduling and turnover according the OAEC calendar (and emergent needs) such that rooms are cleaned and ready before and after OAEC events
Work closely with the Facilities manager to ensure all rooms, buildings and shared outside areas are working properly
Oversee and execute the annual (or more frequent) deep cleanings of all OAEC facilities
Manage vendor relationships in acquiring supplies and materials for Hospitality needs
Maintain all Housekeeping equipment (i.e. vacuums, supplies, etc.) and seasonally re-stocking First Aid kits in various buildings around the site

Guest Services – To hold the integrity of OAEC’s site in its natural beauty and as a clean, tranquil and welcoming place for staff, guests, and visitors

Lead the housekeeping staff to create a ‘beauty way’ experience for OAEC guests, some examples of which include: floral harvesting and arrangement, stocking rooms, tidying outside areas and pathways, etc.
Lead the OAEC staff to support and help hold the integrity of OAEC facilities

Leadership & Management – To exemplify leadership and management in human relations and financial controls

Manage the hourly hospitality staff including recruitment, hiring and training; performance reviews; and general/regular hospitality staff meetings
Participate in other OAEC meetings including Operations Meetings, Weekly Staff Meetings, and Annual Planning Meetings
Prepare and manage the annual Hospitality Department work plan and budget with the Operations Director

Qualifications for the Job:

Interest in, passion for, and commitment to working with a non-profit land-based organization dedicated to a socially just and ecologically restorative transition in economy and culture.
A passion for and taking great joy in creating clean and beautiful spaces, day after day; seeing them used by appreciative guests; then readying them for the next guest.
Interest in and commitment to ecologically appropriate housekeeping materials and methods.
Minimum of three years of professional hospitality experience.
Experience with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training and managing a small staff.
Proven ability to effectively and harmoniously work with a robust, large group of people.
Demonstrated ability to improvise, work with non-standard buildings and infrastructure, and be creative in coming up with solutions to problems.
Fluency in using email, Word, Excel, web browsers, Google Calendar, Docs and Drive, and other basic Macintosh computer software to write documents, manage a budget, schedule staff, and communicate regularly with other staff.
Highly self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and safely, and manage one’s own hours and the hours of others.
Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback, and make changes to align with and contribute to OAEC’s values and culture.
Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and work with many other staff and residents.
Desire and understanding of working as part of a staff collective run organization.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), non-residential position. Salary is $39,500 per year. OAEC offers a generous vacation plan, but does not offer paid health insurance. Staff can participate in OAEC courses and events free of charge, use the OAEC facilities (pond, hot tub, sauna, etc.), harvest produce from our gardens, and eat meals at OAEC when working.
