Younger Youth Homework Tutor – Community Preservation and Development Corporation – Reston, VA

Position Summary

The Younger Youth Homework Tutor (YYHT) will collaborate with the CPDC @ Island Walk After School Program staff to assist elementary school students with homework, engage students in learning activities and further develop programs that foster a love for learning, reinforce attendance and participation and promote healthy youth development. This would be an ideal position for an elementary teacher seeking part-time, after-school work.

Essential Job Functions

The Younger Youth Homework Tutor’s responsibilities include:

Assisting Elementary school students with daily homework completion
Tutor and assist students in various subjects
Help to improve study skills and provide students with tools to assume more responsibility in understanding and completing their homework independently.
Assist with documenting and tracking student progress
Conduct daily attendance and performance reports.
Enforce site policies and program rules consistently and fairly
Communicate observations and concerns regarding participants, program activities, site, resources, etc. with staff supervisor
Meet with Resident Services Site Manager and other After School staff periodically to plan and identify successes and challenges
Submit signed, monthly invoices to Resident Services Site Manager no later than the 7th of the following month and monitor contract

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma required
Experience working with youth, living or working in immigrant communities helpful
Demonstrated interest in community service; previous volunteer experience preferred
Successful experience and satisfaction working with younger youth
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Positive attitude and respect for self and others
Appreciation for diverse world views, cultures and languages
Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Ability to problem solve, to see solutions and opportunities as well as obstacles
Significant degree of personal initiative, assertiveness and self-motivation
Ability to respond to participants’ learning needs with innovative ideas and approaches to instruction
Ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality and abide by CPDC policies and procedures

Training and Support

CPDC provides orientation and training. The CPDC Site Program Manager will provide ongoing supervision and be available for consultation.
