Writer/Copy Editor – Camino Public Relations – New York, NY

Camino Public Relations is seeking a Writer/Copy Editor to deliver a range of written products for internal and public distribution. This position takes a leadership role in creating written materials as well as ensuring the highest level of accuracy and professional presentation in all written products. The Writer/Copy Editor will assist in various areas of client services as directed by firm’s executive staff. This is a technology driven position and requires advanced proficiency including business, online and social applications. The Writer/Copy Editor contributes to Camino’s client services as well as to fostering a healthy, creative workplace.

Location: Opportunities at our headquarters in New York City (Chelsea) and Tucson, AZ; occasional travel may be required.

Camino utilizes several office organizational systems including a project management application. This position requires the ability to develop proficiency in these systems as quickly as possible and the nature of our work may also require after-hours response by staff members to meet client deliverables.

Specifically, the Writer/Copy Editor will:

Conceptualize, write, and edit written products to meet objectives of the assignment, and the needs and requirements of the audience.

Produce a range of written products, from business products to persuasion content for reports, summaries, analyses, op-eds, press releases media statements, advisories, reports, and summaries, content for online engagements, e-blasts and web content and other client materials as needed using AP style and client-specific style guides.

Ensure the accuracy of client materials; ensure materials have been appropriately reviewed with fact checking, proofreading and copy edit of content.Conduct research and implement top professional standards for fact checking for all written products.

Produce foundation and board materials including annual reports and CEO communications.

Meet project deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval; coordinating requirements with contributors; contributing project status information at staff meetings.

Project management of writing products including identifying sources of information; coordinating submissions and collections;

Desktop publishing, editing, and maintaining office-wide compliance with style guides and standards including readability, consistency, style, voice and tone.

Maintain current knowledge of key editorial requirements, legislative issues, regulatory guidelines and organizational goals.

Apply research, problem-solving and creative thinking.

Coordinate the appearance of print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logos, templates etc.

Use business applications and programs including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Google platforms with proficiency in use of templates and applying styles.

Work in a team environment to ensure client needs are met, including scheduling, project tracking, and reporting and ensure start-to-finish completion of assigned projects. Use professional project management software to track efforts and support project completion.

Maintain current awareness of clients’ mission and issues.

Help ensure Camino’s philosophy; mission and vision are practiced in all phases of business operations.

Out-of-town, overnight travel as assigned, both local and out-of-state, to attend mandatory company meetings, client events or to fulfill other job duties is a requirement of employment.

Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience drafting media materials and related products including press releases, media statements, advisories, reports, summaries in a wide variety of formats, tones and style including AP style and client-specific style guides

Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and write on-brand, and produce compelling copy in a variety of communication forms.

Ability to manage projects from brief to final delivery. Demonstrated ability to work on concurrent projects and consistently deliver work on deadline

Ability to solve problems using critical thinking and intersectional approaches.

Ability to act as the firms’ representative with the media and the public in a professional manner aligned with Camino’s best practices.

Strong understanding of policy and legislative impact on client issues.

Deep awareness of social justice and social movement principles.

Detail-oriented, high attention to fact-checking and accurate dissemination of information; advanced online research skills.

Advanced copy editing skills, including the ability to ensure that content is aligned with message strategies, utilizing Camino and client style guides, and follows AP-stylebook guidelines. Experience in proofing and copy editing.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook this includes knowledge in use of templates and applying styles. Also, demonstrated proficiency in Google platforms and the motivation to deepen technical skills. All Camino staff are required to have advanced Microsoft Word and Google skills as a condition of employment.

Five (5) to seven (7) years of professional experience producing a broad range of writing products including a broad range of media materials.

Bachelor’s degree in marketing communications, journalism, business, or related field or an equivalent combination of knowledge and experience.

Commitment to working with shared leadership and cross-functional teams

Ability to exercise professional judgment and discretion in all manner of communications both internal and external.

Strong interpersonal skills including verbal and written communications, effective presentation and listening skills, diplomacy, and conflict resolution skills .

Candidates must pass a background check and be eligible to be bonded
Desired Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in writing and/or editing with demonstrated success, preferably in the nonprofit sector.

Advanced degree in in journalism, marketing, public relations preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of community leadership and the workings of local, municipal, state and federal government

For those positions requiring proficiency in Spanish, both speaking, writing and translating, preferred Advance-Mid Proficiency level. (Camino provided testing).
