Vice President of Resource Development – Memphis – United Way of the Mid-South

United Way of the Mid-South (Memphis, TN) is seeking a Vice President of Resource Development (VPRD) capable of providing critical leadership to achieving our mission and strategic focus. The VPRD will join a team under transition. In December 2014, UWMS welcomed a new CEO who is a well-respected local leader with high energy and commitment to taking the organization to new levels. Since this time, the Resource Development team has also been in transition and the new VPRD will inherit staff that is new to the organization. At this stage of the evolution of UWMS and the RD team, the most qualified VP candidate will be a performance leader with proven skills to establish and lead the systems and protocols that inspire the achievement of the team’s activity and performance metrics. The VPRD will be expected to model best-in-class interpersonal skills among our donors and volunteers, and provide consistent, timely, and relevant coaching to the RD team.

The VPRD position is charged with leading the Resource Development (RD) team to generate the financial resources necessary to advance the UWMS mission and attain its Impact objectives. The position core requirement is to establish and maintain a productive and committed team of staff and volunteers that are fully prepared and able to achieve annual and multi-year financial targets. These financial targets are centered within the annual campaign, special initiative fundraising, Loaned Executive recruitment, sponsorship fund raising, and response to custom giving interests that align with UWMS direction. The VPRD is also charged with credibly representing UWMS and its strategic direction to community and corporate leaders and to work closely with the President & CEO to cultivate the relationships and contributions needed to succeed.

Essential focus points and attributes of the VPRD role are:
Maintain a donor-centric culture: Hold all players accountable for achieving financial targets through effective and constant (year-round) relationship building efforts, and responsiveness to donor interests and needs.
Opportunity generation: Ensure the RD team has in-depth knowledge of assigned accounts and prospects and is consistently surfacing opportunities for new and increased commitment.
Focus on donor presence: Ensure year-round staff and volunteer engagement of donors and prospects, and the elimination of barriers and paradigms that inhibit this presence.
Ensure strong operations: Ensure the effective management of day-to-day operations with a concerted focus on maximizing the effectiveness and productivity of RD processes, and the effective capture and management of donor information, needs, and interests.
Problem-solving mindset and acumen: Work in concert effectively with direct reports and peer Vice Presidents, and seek synergy and collaboration across departments at all times.
Essential Functions and the Percentage of Time spent on each:

10% Establish and manage the multi-year and annual RD strategic and operational plan.30% Recruitment and management of annual fundraising volunteer leaders and teams.30% Lead and manage priority donor opportunity and problem response efforts.30% Assess and reduce barriers to ensure the success of the RD team and volunteers.

Related aptitudes and functions:
a.) Passionate commitment to raising revenues via consistent & meaningful donor engagement.b.) Ability to set clear objectives and manage and coach the team to performance requirements.c.) The disciplined use of CRM data systems as the primary vehicle for measuring progress.d.) Commit to personal and team engagement that ensures the high credibility of UWMS.

Working conditions: At least 30% of the time will be away from the office. Adequate transportation is essential.Technical Experience: Proficient and relevant knowledge and skills with a focus on customer relationship management systems, and office software programs.

Experience Required: Five plus years of fundraising or applied United Way fundraising experience or five plus years in a sales environment with emphasis on applied customer-centric relationship and problem-solving skills; proven ability to lead teams through a balance of data-based performance management, in-person team member coaching, and action-oriented problem-solving; strong oral and written communications skills with an ability to effectively engage diverse groups of individuals and organizations.
