Status: Full-time, salaried
Hours: Standard work week, but must be flexible to work non-standard hours as needed
Travel: less than 35% — travel for teacher training workshops, partner visits, and some at-sea (domestic and international) as needed to support Nautilus expeditions and events
The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is seeking candidates for the position of STEM Education Specialist. The STEM Education Specialist will primarily focus on the development of OET’s K-12 STEM Learning Modules. S/he will also work with OET’s education team to contribute to the ongoing development of multiple initiatives and programs including: (1) the Honors Research Program for high schoolers, (2) the Science & Engineering Internship Program for undergraduate and graduate students, (3) the Engineering Design Challenge for undergraduates, (4) the Science Communication Fellowship for educators, (5) the Nautilus Ambassador Program for educators, and (6) the Community STEM Program. The STEM Education Specialist will work closely with the Education Programs Coordinator and Community STEM Program Coordinator to ensure best practices in STEM education are being achieved in all programs.

The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is a 501(c)3 founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard. Our mission is the exploration of the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of STEM education and technological innovation. The Nautilus Exploration Program centers on scientific ocean exploration launched from aboard the 64-meter Exploration Vessel Nautilus, supported by state-of-the-art robotic and telepresence technologies on board and ashore that are used to advance ocean exploration and STEM education worldwide. Primary Responsibilities
Contribute to the ongoing development of STEM lessons and activities for OET’s K-12 Learning Modules
Contribute to the evaluation and assessment strategy for OET’s K-12 Learning Modules
Assist with identifying strategic partners for OET’s educational programs
Assist and occasionally lead Teacher Training Workshops & Professional Development in partner communities participating in OET’s Community STEM Program
Work closely with the Education Programs Coordinator to provide seasonal support of OET’s Honors Research Program for high school seniors, Science & Engineering Internship Program for undergraduate and graduate students, and Science Communication Fellowship for formal and informal educators
Contribute to the ongoing development of outcomes, learning goals, and mentorship needs for all of OET’s educational programs
Other responsibilities as needed
Required Qualifications & Experience
BA/BS in science, education, engineering, or relevant field
3+ years experience in formal and/or informal K-12 education, preferably in a STEM field
Previous experience with STEM curriculum/content development
Deep understanding of Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core guidelines, current issues in public education, and best practices in formal and informal education
Demonstrated involvement in professional educational organizations
Comfort with and skills in public presentation development and delivery
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Quick learner, willing to roll up sleeves to learn new skills and technologies
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a multidisciplinary team
Self-starter and positive team-player attitude
Willingness to travel and participate in at-sea expeditions aboard OET’s Exploration Vessel Nautilus
Eligible to work in the USA; current passport without travel restrictions
Must pass criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
MS degree in relevant field
Previous experience or familiarity with program evaluation/assessment
Previous experience utilizing Google Docs and Drive for collaboration purposes
