Senior Deputy Executive Director, Physical Plant Operations – Detroit Public Schools – Detroit, MI

The Senior Deputy Executive Director, Physical Plant Operations collaborate with the Executive Director, Operations to implement the vision of the Detroit Public School Operations Office. S/he will play a critical role in improving and optimizing the district’s facilities. S/he will ensure that school-level leaders receive appropriate support in managing their building operations to improve academic instruction and student achievement.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Executive Director, Operations, the Sr. Deputy Executive Director, Physical Plant Operations will:

Coordinate and oversee facilities operations, custodial services, maintenance and energy saving initiatives
Coordinate with Network Leaders and their teams to ensure that school facilities operational needs are met
Manage and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of schools by improving each function as well as coordination and communication between support services and schools
Organize, direct and control the activities of facility service providers
Attain daily building operational goals and resolve potential problems
Track metrics and implement programs for improvement
Ensure all contractual metrics are consistently met or exceeded
Operate in an efficient, cost conscious manner to achieve or exceed budget objectives
Identify areas for improvement in all facilities operations
Develop and execute all facilities operations plans
Effectively interact with other organizational offices (e.g. Finance, Procurement, Human Resources, Technology) to best align organizational resources
Improve facilities operations systems, processes and policies in support of organizations mission including but not limited to management reporting, information flow and management, business processes and organizational planning
Lead long-term facilities operations planning, including initiatives geared toward operational excellence
Manage facilities budget in coordination with the Executive Director of Operations
Develop individual functional budgets
Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and lead the development and modification of facilities policies and procedures
Serve as liaison for executive staff with regulatory agencies related to areas of responsibility.
Closely monitor training efforts within the office
Development and deliver presentations and other materials for the office
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Operations or designee

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
ยท In-depth knowledge of building engineering controls, energy management, sustainability and best practices in custodial service

EDUCATION
Must possess and provide proof of a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, mechanical engineering, other related field required from an accredited institution; Master’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Minimum 5 to 7 years management experience in operations including 5 years of demonstrated experience in continuous improvement of engineering building controls, energy management, sustainability and custodial service
Demonstrated experience and success with positive people practices and creating a culture of trust and engagement
