We are accepting applications for our paid 10-week fall internship program in Washington, DC. Part-time and full-time positions are available.

Primary Responsibilities:

Support ERN staff with background research and analysis of federal K-12 and higher education issues, such as those related to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Higher Education Act, college financial aid, charter schools, school accountability, and Common Core State Standards.
Conduct literature and policy scans, perform data analyses, and summarize research and event findings with memos, PowerPoint presentations, and/or blog posts.
Provide communications support by updating our email contact lists, crafting our weekly email newsletter, and providing social media support on Twitter and Facebook.

At ERN, we set four goals for our interns:

Develop familiarity with federal K-12 and higher education policy, and other major federal education initiatives.
Build issue expertise in at least one current area. Interns are encouraged to blog as they are comfortable on topics related to their research.
Strengthen professional skills by working in a high-functioning advocacy and policy research office and preparing excellent written material.
Engage with Washington, DC, whether by attending Congressional hearings, nonprofit briefings or working with local education agencies.

We evaluate candidates against five criteria:

Fit: What is the nature of the candidate’s interest and experience in education, politics, and policy (e.g. whether through coursework or extracurricular/professional experience)?
Initiative: Can the candidate demonstrate an entrepreneurial drive and willingness to take initiative on new projects, however large or small?
Capacity: Does the applicant have the academic background and skills required to succeed in the internship?
