Regional Field Director, Spokane, WA – League of Education Voters – Seattle, WA

The Regional Field Director builds a local community network of people who speak up to improve the quality and funding of education in the state of Washington and in particular improving outcomes for marginalized communities. The range of the work includes early learning through higher education. To accomplish this work, the Regional Field Director collaborates with the LEV Policy, Communications, Government Relations and Field teams, to build a network of people. Projects will include building teams of advocates, building coalitions of organizations, planning and implementing educational and fundraising events, and regularly interacting with policy makers.

This position is full-time and reports to the LEV State Field Director.

Position responsibilities

Build relationships with advocates, community based organizations, and institutions to better understand their needs, educate and motivate people to speak up to improve education in Washington State

Listen and learn from various stakeholders their needs, and communicate those needs to influence policy and Government affairs directions in policy
Encourage and train volunteers to speak up by email, phone calls, testifying. Facilitate placement of volunteers in policy positions
Build teams of volunteers and build the capacity of volunteers to lead the teams
Organize and ask volunteers to support election campaigns at both the state and local level, via endorsements, phone banking, doorbelling and other campaign opportunities
Design and execute work plans for regional area to meet the needs of diverse multiethnic communities, train education advocates, and implement advocacy tactics and strategies
Effectively build coalitions and communicate LEV policy directions

Required skills

Ability to engage in effective community organizing with measurable outcomes
Sensitivity to racial, ethnic and class differences as well as other differences among people with whom he or she will work
Develop sustained collaborative community relationships and working partnerships with key stakeholders (i.e. community based organizations, youth service providers, parents, and school district representatives)
Passionate about improving public education for all of Washington’s students and using social and digital media to raise awareness, build political will, and motivate audiences to take action
Ability to meet multiple, shifting deadlines and priorities with nimbleness and flexibility while maintaining a perspective on long-term goals
Proven track record in public speaking
Strategic thinker, ability to map daily responsibilities to LEV’s overall mission and goals
Work proactively and take initiative to support the changing needs of the LEV team
Must have a car; evening and weekend work required

Ability to effectively communicate complex, detailed information in a clear, concise, easy-to-understand manner for a variety of audiences
Exceptional written and oral communication skills

A strong track record as an implementer who can prioritize and manage multiple work streams simultaneously
Highly organized, detailed self-starter who can work independently, as well as collaborate with team members and external partners

Minimum qualifications

Proven track record organizing volunteers to advocate on an issue either locally or to the state
Established relationships with regional and diverse communities
Job includes a minimum of 15 days of travel and will include evening and weekend meetings
Bachelor’s degree
At least 5-7 years of work experience or relevant volunteer experience
A deep commitment to, and passion for, ensuring every student in Washington State has access to an excellent education by providing supports to close the opportunity gaps in the current education system
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 2010 including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
