Regional Coordinator – School on Wheels Inc, of California – Ventura, CA

School on Wheels (www.schoolonwheels.org) is a non-profit organization. Our mission is to enhance educational opportunities for homeless children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with the highest level of education possible.

This is a volunteer management position where the Regional Coordinator manages the Ventura County region of School on Wheels (SOW) and all volunteer personnel within the region, including volunteer Tutor Coordinators (TCs) and tutors. The majority of time in this position is spent recruiting, managing and supporting volunteers. It also includes a focus on volunteer retention and appreciation. The Regional Coordinator will also conduct outreach to expand and encourage School on Wheels’ programs in shelters, motels, group foster homes and other homeless locations where these students reside. This position does not work directly with students on a daily basis but encourages access to our program and services via our organization and the volunteer tutors.

Major Responsibilities

Recruit new volunteers and TCs to ensure an ongoing supply to meet the needs of the region. Match tutors with children who need them and reassign tutors when their students move. Communicate with, support, encourage, and connect with volunteers (through frequent visits, email, and telephone calls) and be responsive to their needs. Work with TCs to ensure children are provided with tutors, in as timely a manner as possible. At shelters with no coordinators, act as the coordinator, keeping in close contact with the tutors. Conduct trainings with new volunteers and educate them regarding SOW’s tutoring policies and guidelines. Provide supplies for the coordinators, tutors and students. Conduct periodic group meetings with TCs and tutors to provide a sense of community, share ideas/resources, and to provide feedback and input to improving the process. Develop volunteer thank you and related appreciation events throughout the year.

Qualifications: One to three years experience managing volunteers, preferably working with at-risk children. Must be organized with excellent time management skills and able to balance multiple priorities and deadlines. Ability to perform in a team environment, while working independently. Ability to listen and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people — excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills a must. Excellent computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office and Internet applications. Fluency in English and Spanish preferred. Ability to represent SOW in the highest manner and exemplify SOW’s values, integrity and ethics.

Working Conditions: Evening and weekend work required. Travel required; valid California drivers license, auto insurance and use of personal vehicle. Lifting of material donations, including backpacks, school supplies, etc. required periodically
