Part-Time High School Teacher – Washington – Emerson Preparatory School

Emerson Preparatory School, a small, dynamic, independent high school near DC’s Dupont Circle, is seeking part-time teachers for math, English, Spanish, and French for the 2016-2017 school year. Emerson’s 60 students are diverse in every way, hailing from all over the city and all over the globe, and display a variety of learning styles. Classes have a unique, informal, intellectually vibrant atmosphere. Our teachers adapt to students’ needs while presenting challenging, stimulating material that connects classroom content with the outside world. If this sounds like the way you approach teaching, we would love to hear from you.

The responsibilities of the math teacher include teaching both core high-school courses and math electives in an engaging, responsive manner that bridges math fundamentals with real-life applications. The math teacher should be excited by the chance to lead small classes with students of different levels and by the opportunity to create courses outside the traditional math syllabus, such as the math of music, game theory, or coding/C++. Please let us know in your cover letter any such courses you might be able to offer.

The responsibilities of the English teacher include 2-3 workshop-style classes averaging 8-12 students. We welcome teachers who have experience teaching both staple high-school texts and contemporary genres and who have background in areas such as creative writing, drama, podcasting, or journalism. Candidates should have experience developing students as expository writers. In your cover letter, please indicate some courses you might be able to offer.

We are also seeking knowledgeable and innovative teachers for Spanish I, Spanish IV, French III, and possibly French I. We welcome teachers who combine language instruction with the study of culture, including using the ample resources of DC to excite students about the art, music, food, and communities that connect to their area of study.

Our ideal candidates for all subject areas would have experience teaching at the middle- or high-school level, but we also welcome resumés from early-career teachers. Our most successful teachers are those who meet the energy of high-school students with flexibility, humor, and focus. Applicants must be authorized to work legally in the United States and must reside in the DC area.

These are part-time contract positions without benefits, for two or more courses with the possibility but no guarantee of continued employment after the contract has ended. Compensation varies according to candidates’ background, experience, and skills, and will be commensurate with adjunct positions at local universities and high schools.

Our school year typically begins in mid-August and ends in early June. Some additional time outside of scheduled teaching hours is required for academic support, professional development, and community events.

Interested candidates can send resumés and cover letter to our main office via mainoffice@emersonprep.net. Please put the title of the position you’re seeking (eg, “Math Teacher”) in the subject line. You can learn more about us at www.emersonprep.org. We look forward to hearing from you.
