Nativity Teaching Fellow – Nativity Preparatory School of Boston – Jamaica Plain, MA

Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. Founded in 1990, Nativity is staffed by experienced teachers and dedicated volunteers. Working closely with families, the school prepares students for success in high school and college. The Nativity Fellows Program offers an apprenticeship in teaching along with opportunities for leadership in the afternoon and evening programs. The roles and responsibilities of a Nativity fellow include, but are not limited to, the items herein. All Nativity staff members are expected to contribute as circumstances dictate.

These duties will be performed the length of our school year. Contracts begin the last week in June and conclude at the end of June the following year. Please note how this timeframe may impact the logistics of moving in or out of the fellows’ housing.

Academic Day (Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-3:15 PM)

As part of an apprenticeship in teaching, work with Lead Teachers to develop lesson plans, classroom management strategies, gather instructional materials designed to enhance the educational experience of students
Provide direct instruction, remediation, and enrichment to small groups of students during X Periods and as determined by Lead Teachers
Direct small student advisee groups through weekly meetings and ongoing monitoring, advocacy, and communication regarding individual progress
Participate in grade level and department meetings designed to improve classroom instruction, discuss individual and collective student progress, and identify students and issues of concern
Supervise early morning, mid-morning and lunch recess, meal times, and dismissal as assigned
Perform hall monitor duties as assigned

Afternoon Activities (3:15-5:00 PM)

Coach one sport per athletic season and supervise winter activities such as cooking, chess, Harry Potter club, or other programs initiated by fellows and approved by the school
Plan and implement athletic practices appropriate for middle school students. These practices are designed to foster improved physical conditioning, knowledge of game rules and increased tactical awareness of the sport
Foster the elements of team play and fair competition
Proctor JUG as needed
Attend weekly faculty meetings

Evening Program (Monday-Wednesday, 5:00-8:00 PM)

Supervise transitions to Evening Study either in the hallways or by standing at the door
Proctor Evening Study as assigned
Maintain an quiet, orderly environment conducive to study
Assist in the supervision of Boston College PULSE tutors

Additional School-wide Responsibilities May Include

Oversee the community service program
Serve on the Admissions Committee
Serve on the Faculty Recruitment Committee
Act as tech liaison to the school’s off sight tech support team
Assist with high school placement
Ensure the maintenance of school vans
Coordinate dinner cooks for Evening Study
Compile student, faculty, and staff birthdays and highlight them publicly
Assist with other school-sponsored events (such as Potlucks, Christmas Party, Thanksgiving celebration etc.) as scheduled

Community Member

Attend school Mass on a monthly basis and Faculty Retreat twice a year
Aid in the development of the community living experience based on a simple lifestyle at the fellows’ house
Live in a manner that is respectful of housemates
Perform specific floor duties (grocery shopping, living room, bathroom, and kitchen cleaning) as scheduled
Perform house duties (shovel and de-ice walkway and sidewalk, mow lawn, take out trash, and sort house mail) as scheduled
