Middle School Teacher, Special Education – School in the square Public Charter School – New York, NY

The special education teacher responsibilities include:

1. Co-teaching core classes in content areas, teaching skills to small groups, facilitating a daily mindfulness advisory based on the MindUP curriculum and participation in other school-wide initiatives
2. Creating and maintaining a classroom learning environment of respect and rapport
3. Developing systems, structures and routines that enable all students to be successful
4. Designing instruction that incorporates supports and accommodations designed to meet the unique needs of each student and to enable their access to the general education curriculum, developing lessons to meet high academic standards and to allow SWD to fully demonstrate their conceptual and procedural knowledge and skills in mathematics, reading, writing, speaking and listening
5. Foster student engagement by presenting information in multiple ways and allowing for diverse avenues of action and expression
6. Developing Individualized Education Program (IEP) which includes annual goals aligned with and chosen to facilitate the attainment of grade-level academic standards
7. Collaborating with colleagues to plan and hold each other mutually accountable to the work
8. Designing formative and summative assessments that monitor student learning and provide the information needed to differentiate instruction and personalize learning for all students
9. Maintaining recording systems that are efficient and effective, communicate with families clearly, frequently, and with cultural sensitivity
10. Participate in summer professional development and onboarding of students

Qualifications:

1. Prior experience and success in teaching middle school students
2. New York State Teaching Certification for Students with Disabilities
3. Professional portfolio or collection of work that shows evidence of developing engaging and innovative curriculum with an eye to Common Core standards and the effective use of assessments to inform instruction
4. Capacity to be self-reflective, accept and implement feedback to improve instruction
5. Eager to collaborate, share resources and learn from colleagues
6. Enjoyment of teaching and coaching adolescents in both academic and non-instructional situations, respecting and encouraging student efforts
7. Flexibility and stamina needed to be comfortable in a fluid, innovative work environment and an ability to adjust to unexpected tasks and updated priorities that are part of a start-up.
8. Participation in ongoing professional learning such as belonging to a professional organization, reading professional journals, attending educational conferences, being a member of a study group and taking university classes
9. A Master’s degree in Education or relevant content area preferred
10. Ability to commit to planning sessions in Spring of 2016 and staff orientation in summer of 2016 Compensation and benefits:
