Middle School Program Coordinator – City Kids Wilderness Project – Washington, DC

Primary Location: Washington, DC and wilderness areas in the Mid-Atlantic region
Type of Position: 9 month position (early September through May), approximately 20-30 hours per week

Compensation: $15 per hour for regular Tuesday – Saturday schedule. Opportunity for additional weekend hours at the rate of $75 per day.
Training Dates: September 21st – 24th, with additional training provided throughout the year

Position Summary: The Middle School Program Coordinator will be responsible for the planning and delivery of high-quality outdoor adventure and experiential education programming throughout the school year. The Program Coordinator works with a team of staff, volunteers, and interns to implement programming and reports to the Middle School Program Director. Exemplary school-year staff will receive priority screening for our summer openings in Jackson, WY, and position renewal the following year.

Key Responsibilities:

Coordinate and lead outdoor adventure and experiential education programming, including weekend trips, evening field trips, family workshops, and individual youth and family mentorship.
Design programming that promotes City Kids goals and outcomes including, building interpersonal skills, problem solving, openness to trying new things, caring for self, others and the environment. Each trip should include a goal setting and a debrief and reflection component.
Conduct regular outreach to youth, families, and program partners through mailings, emails, phone calls, and in person meetings to maximize the involvement of each enrolled youth.
Responsible for coordinating all aspects of trips including emergency response plan, first aid, gear, meals, liaising with contracted guides, transportation, post-trip cleaning, and parent follow-up.
Inventory and repair outdoor adventure gear; organize and maintain gear room.
Schedule staff and volunteers to support and/or lead each trip/activity. Each trip must meet City Kids’ requirements for staff to student ratios, and staff qualifications.
Research and liaise with outdoor outfitters and other vendors to support program needs. Secure permits as necessary.
Attention to cost and ability to negotiate discounts and in-kind donations is critical.
Create and maintain written program materials and curriculum.
Maintain strong relationships with existing partner organizations.
Support annual new participant recruitment efforts. Activities include, school presentations, parent meetings, youth interviews, gathering and following up on applications, and logging into database.
Support the continued enrollment of all participants. Conduct regular outreach to disengaged youth and families, and youth who need additional resources and support.
Ensure that youth records are properly maintained and files are complete and up to date.
Enter daily attendance into program database immediately following program activity.
Support program evaluation work, including administering surveys and soliciting feedback.
Adhere to City Kids’ policies, procedures, and risk management practices.
Maintain an internal culture that reflects City Kids values of on-going learning, feedback, & respect.
All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Schedule

Schedule includes weekday, evening, and weekend commitments based around program calendar. Program calendar includes weekly Saturday and/or Sunday programming, school and national holiday trips, winter break trips, and 5-8 day spring break programming for multiple cohorts of youth, as well as intermittent afterschool field trips.
Program Coordinator works a regular Tuesday – Saturday schedule, approximately 20-30 hours per week with the opportunity for additional weekend hours at the rate of $75 per day.
Regular Schedule: Tuesday through Thursday 10-2pm, Friday 10-4pm or longer as needed for trip preparation, Saturday or Sunday half to full day (trip day).

Note: several times a season, the Program Coordinator will plan and lead longer overnight trips. The weekday schedule will adjust as needed.

Some schedule flexibility may be possible; schedule subject to change to best fit program needs.

Qualifications:

A personal commitment to and deep understanding of City Kids’ mission.
Experience and passion for planning and leading youth based outdoor adventure programming.
Summer camp, previous outdoor adventure or experiential education experience preferred.
Experience and passion for working with underserved urban youth.
A successful track record of mobilizing a team, and inspiring and leading youth.
Attention to detail required.
Outstanding verbal, written, and listening skills.
Flexibility, creativity and the ability to thrive in an evolving environment.
An engaging and dynamic manner that demonstrates warmth and good humor when working with others. Personal qualities of maturity, humility, strong work ethic & a roll-up-my-sleeves attitude.
A valid, clean driver’s license.
Current CPR, Wilderness First Aid or higher certification.
Pre-employment background checks will be conducted.

City Kids Wilderness Project is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that providing enriching life experiences for underserved youth can enhance their lives, the lives of their families, and the greater community. City Kids provides 130 under-resourced DC youth with extraordinary outdoor adventure and leadership development opportunities to build resiliency, broaden horizons, and ensure skills for success. Programs take place throughout the year in and around Washington, D.C. and during the summer at our ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Youth enroll as sixth graders and continue their engagement with City Kids through middle school, high school and beyond. Our goals include that our youth graduate from high school or earn their GED, and that they find meaningful postsecondary opportunities.
