Mastery Learning Specialist – InnovateEDU – Brooklyn, NY

InnovateEDU’s mission is to eliminate the achievement gap by accelerating innovation in Common Core-aligned, next generation school models and learning tools that serve, inform, and enhance teaching and learning. InnovateEDU partners with Brooklyn Laboratory Charter High School (LAB) to provide organizational and operational support that enables LAB to accomplish its mission and pursue growth. LAB is an open enrollment, college-preparatory, public charter school in Brooklyn, NY that will open to serve its first class of 9th graders in 2016. LAB’s mission is to prepare students with the academic foundation, digital literacy, and leadership skills necessary to succeed in college and professional life as they grow as ethical leaders. LAB is designed to educate high-need urban students, particularly those who are least well served by their current educational options.

We seek an experienced Mastery Learning Specialist to work together with instructional design experts to create an academic framework appropriate to the secondary school context, which enhances deployment of mastery-based competency progressions throughout the curriculum.

Responsibilities

Support design efforts that will enable mastery-based learning and personalization at the school;
Initiate and lead pilots as well as Fall Feedback sessions that support competency-based and personalized learning within the school design, launch, and iteration phases, with the goal of developing strong and innovative organizational systems to manage mastery-based learning;
Work with partners to identify consultants for mastery learning system design work and blended learning pilots;
Supervise Digital Media and Learning Fellows, and a data analyst consultant;
Support the design and execution of mastery learning professional development;
Develop and execute evaluation methodology to determine success/impact of mastery system design;
Work with the data analyst and Director of Technology to establish systems and data feedback loops for use in model design and launch;
Lead the planning and implementation of pilots of the high school approaches developed with current 8th and 9th graders.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred);
Strong understanding of mastery-based learning where students have multiple opportunities to show mastery through performance-based assessments;
Demonstrated use of design thinking to plan and iterate on project implementation;
Exceptional interpersonal skills with a track record of investing in others toward a shared vision in order to drive toward a shared set of outcomes;
Experience managing teams;
Ability to be bold, innovative, and an engaging change agent and culture-creator; visionary leader and facilitator.
