Manager of Literacy Initiatives – Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia

position summary

The Literacy Initiative Manager provides leadership, direction, and administration for the Club’s literacy programs and services in conjunction and support to the Executive Operations Officer. He/she provides guidance of literacy services for Club members who have literacy needs, especially those with reading challenges. This includes the areas of organizational program planning, coordination, implementation, and supervision of all Literacy Supervisors, setting the standard for performance and evaluation. The Literacy Initiatives Manager provides training, consultation, and support to the Boys & Girls Club staff.

essential duties & responsibilities

Coordinates the Club’s overall approach to provide literacy services, youth development strategies, recognition, and reinforcement for Club members.
Responsible for implementing the Literacy Initiative at home Club site
Develops and administers the Club’s written policies related to literacy services and the evaluation and tracking of Club members progress.
Provides administrative support to the Literacy Services Division.
Plans and provides in-service training to assist Literacy Supervisors and Club staff in developing their awareness of literacy interventions and multisensory instruction.
Monitors the Club’s system for recording Club member’s progress, achievements, as well as staff intervention. Provides reports as required for various funding sources.
Establishes and maintains working relationships with organizations and institutions that provide resources and support for the Club’s literacy goals and vision.
Meets established schedules/deadlines as part of normal routine; accepts a variety of daily activities while maintaining high accuracy requirements.
Maintains confidentiality in all assignments and responsibilities.
Assist in the transportation of kids including, but not limited to, driving, van aides, and walking escorts when necessary.
Responsible for helping to keep the Clubs clean.
All BGCP employees are Mandated Reporters, and must report any suspected Child Abuse or Neglect to their direct supervisor.

General Responsibilities

Performs other related duties as necessary or as assigned by the CEO(s), EPO(s), Unit Director(s), and/or Program Director(s).

Remains flexible and adaptable in work schedules and work assignments as defined by departmental and organizational needs.

Represents Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia in a manner that conveys professionalism, confidentiality, courtesy, fairness, personal integrity, and respect for others.

qualifications

    A. education and/or experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
Training in Slingerland, Wilson or similar instructional method strongly preferred
Three (3) or more years of experience working with disadvantaged youth, developing and implementing social, cultural, or recreation programs preferred
Sets standards in a Club leadership position where performance and overall organization expectations are modeled

Excellent management skills required
Ability to supervise professional staff and volunteers
Demonstrated ability to professionally and effectively communicate verbally and in writing to persons of all levels
The ability and desire to work with youths 5-18 years of age in a variety of recreational and social environments
Possesses the ability to work independently and efficiently without direct supervision
Maintains confidentiality in all assignments and responsibilities
Strong computer skills; Microsoft Office preferred
Most importantly, needs to be energetic, reliable, loyal and a team player
