Head Instructor – Homes for the Homeless – Bronx, NY

Homes for the Homeless is seeking an experienced, dedicated and creative instructor for our Children’s Education Center (CEC) at the Williamsbridge Family Inn. The CEC provides a full day early childhood education program for children ages 2.5 – 4 years old, as well as a school age afterschool program for children ages 5-10. This full time position would be ideal for an education professional who is interested in working with both early childhood and early elementary aged students outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

Program Operations:

Write monthly lesson plans and calendar of events
Assist students with homework and other school projects
Update bulletin boards in the classroom and main hallway
Maintain a clean, bright and active classroom environment
Assist in the coordination of trips and activities
Attend trips as needed
Provide “lesson of the day”, art, recreation and computer time
Weekly recruitment of new school-aged children
Report suspected child abuse or neglect to Facility Administrator.
Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to program participants.

Advocacy and Support:

Communicate with parents and other site staff as needed
Develop and maintain relationships with parents
Research community resources to use in conjunction with HFH programming or to refer clients to as a supplemental service.

Administration:

Maintain student files
Assist with educational supply order

Other:

Assist in book fairs, holiday parties and activities, plays, etc.
Assist in other areas as needed

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
3-5 years minimum experience in Early Childhood Education and School Age youth program management
Knowledge of Microsoft Office
At least one year of experience working with children in an early childhood setting, school or after school setting
Excellent organizational and planning skills
Must pass a background investigation which includes employment history and criminal background check

Work hours are 10:30 am – 6:30pm during the school year and flexible during the summer. Must be available to work an occasional Saturday.
