Education Coordinator – Coastal Watershed Council – Santa Cruz, CA

Essential Functions: The Education Coordinator will report to the Executive Director and assume responsibility for implementing CWC’s education programs, funded by grants from federal agencies and private foundations, and contracts with local city and county agencies. Education activities include designing and implementing watershed-focused, climate change and “green schools” curriculum for grades K-12, including classroom presentations, field trips and summer camps. The Coordinator will work with educators to plan and implement all of CWC’s education work, teaching youth and adults alike about the importance of rivers, creeks and watersheds to our daily lives. The Coordinator will also assist with CWC’s stewardship and monitoring projects, and perform other tasks as needed.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This position is a full-time (40 hrs/week) role leading CWC’s educational programs, working with other CWC staff and volunteers. This position requires a flexible, creative and energetic individual who is passionate about environmental issues, and genuinely enjoys teaching and inspiring youth in the classroom and in the field. Excellent computer skills and a comfort level presenting to youth and adults in group settings are essential.

Examples of Duties:

Prepare and edit existing watershed awareness and environmental education curriculum, including climate change
Create lesson plans and deliver classroom presentations, field trips, after-school programs and summer camps in consultation with school teachers and local community centers or after school clubs
Design, promote and lead fun and educational water tours and family field days, such as native plant identification & restoration days or water quality monitoring field trips
Assist other CWC staff in fulfilling the requirements of existing contracts and grants
Assist in development of new CWC programs
Take responsibility for project management including project-level accounting and grant/contract management
Perform related duties as required
Water quality monitoring in the field

Typical Physical Activities:

Sit and stand for extended periods of time
Use of basic office equipment including computers, phone, copiers, etc.
Drive via motor vehicle to sites around Monterey Bay, including to schools and field sites
Lift and carry 25 lbs.

Qualifications Required:

Experience & Education:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or

University with major coursework in Environmental Science or a related field, and at least two years of relevant job experience.

Ability to:

Lead classroom presentations and field trips
Excel in classroom management
Develop and implement environmental education curriculum appropriate for students and/or families
Partner effectively with school teachers and administrators
Tactfully interact with and manage students in classroom and field-based settings
Proficiently utilize Microsoft Windows, Excel and Word to manage files, track expenses and manage monthly budgets, write reports, and excel at other office tasks using a PC
Manage volunteers and other staff as necessary
Keep good records and maintain excellent organization
Pay close attention to detail
Positively represent CWC to local schools and the general public
Adjust to varying work needs, be flexible and work with teams
Create and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and outside partners
Proficiently use standard office equipment: phone, fax, computers, printers, copiers, etc.
Prepare and present clear and concise oral and written communication
Write, edit and efficiently prepare professional correspondence
Use the Internet for basic research
Prioritize tasks and efficiently manage time
Strategize key activities to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives using sound judgment
Balance taking initiative with positively accepting direction

Practice general office/vehicle safety practices and regulations
Conduct field activities as part of water quality monitoring

Qualifications Desired:

Knowledge of:

Social media networking tools
Web development tools
Marketing strategies and tools
Federal and state regulations and policies pertaining to storm water quality and urban runoff
Research methods, including water quality monitoring protocols and river restoration practices

Ability to:

Prepare and deliver lessons in Spanish
Write grants, fundraising proposals & lead donation campaigns
Manage and analyze water quality monitoring data
Use Excel as an advanced user
Plan and organize major events

Other Requirements: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license. Possession and proof of a good driving record as evidenced by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years duration. The driving record will not contribute to an increase in CWC’s automobile insurance rates. Occasionally work evenings and weekends as needed for CWC events.
