Citizenship Class Instructor – Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc

Founded in 1971, the Immigration and Refugee Department (IRD) of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is a leading non-profit organization that has served thousands of immigrants and refugees. In partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library system, IRD is offering citizenship classes to applicable legal permanent residents. These classes are aimed at preparing the resident for the Naturalization Interview done by USCIS by combining ESL, History, Geography, Civics, and U.S. culture into one course. The program will be divided in two levels, Level 1 being a beginner course for students needing more help with their English and Level 2 for students that have an English language capacity suitable to take the interview.

Responsibilities:

IRD seeks a Citizenship Class Instructor responsible for teaching ESL/civics classes in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles area. Each class consists of three hours per session. Instructor will be compensated for 1 additional hour per session for class prep and lesson planning. Classes will either be on Saturday mornings or afternoons or on a weekday evening.

Essential responsibilities for this position:

Complete orientation and training.

Conduct registration during student orientation and give placement test.

Administer all classes, keep attendance and submit weekly attendance sheets.

Create and deliver lesson plans.

Teach Citizenship Test questions, vocab and book chapters as outlined in the curriculum guide.

Grade student exams and assignments.

Communicate with supervisor to ensure implementation of best practices.

Provide guidance to and oversee Volunteer Teacher’s Assistants.

Qualifications:

At least 1 year of prior teaching experience in ESL or civics.

BA in education, English, ESL, history, or related field.

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication.

Cultural sensitivity and patience with limited English speakers.

English and Spanish fluency required.

Location:

Catholic Charities of Los Angeles office is located at 1530 James M. Wood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90015. This position will require regional travel to Los Angeles Public Libraries in the Los Angeles area and the San Fernando Valley.Employment Type: Contract. Part Time (4 hours/week).

Days/Hours: Flexible schedule. Possible Saturdays or weekday evenings.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience ($15-25/ hour).
