Associate Director of Development

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Based in Washington, DC, identify and cultivate donors and implement targeted solicitation strategies designed to increase the donor base and close gifts. Develop, plan, and execute targeted community fundraising events to achieve defined regional goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

Assist the Director of Development in setting fundraising priorities and establishing financial goals.
Manage portfolio of individual, corporate and foundation donors and prospects. In consultation with the Director of Development, identify, cultivate, build and solidify relationships with new and established contributors. Analyze historic patterns of giving and assist in developing strategies to encourage new gifts and increase contributions.
Directly solicit and close gifts from donors and prospects and maintain relationships through mail, phone or in-person contacts. Coordinate direct mail campaigns. Ensure, either personally or through subordinate staff, that required donor records are maintained.
Work with the Regional Director of Development and Regional Director to cultivate and steward lay leadership, and stimulate effective participation in fundraising.
Plan, organize and execute fundraising events such as corporate and professional dinners, parlor meetings and special events. Organize event committee meetings; mentor event chairs and co-chairs. Coordinate event program, honorees and attendees. Assign responsibilities and monitor subordinate staff and volunteers in preparation for, during and after the event.
Solicit and cultivate relationships with young donors and leadership, and create opportunities for their on-going engagement.
Prepare donor communications, program outlines and publicity materials. Initiate and respond to media contacts to promote awareness of ADL fundraising events and honorees.
Participate in programmatic events to define and enhance fundraising potential.
Cultivate and maintain community relationships and community outreach.
Contribute to regional management by participating in overall regional office administration.

Secondary

Participate in special assignments or projects to assist the Regional Director, Director of Development, or a representative at the National level.
Participate in development-related functions such as marketing, design/preparation of print materials, event logistics, and post-event follow up based on individual skills and office needs.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Participate in supervising Events Manager and Development Assistant.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience.
Five to seven years of community fundraising experience in a volunteer environment. Experience in direct solicitation and closing gifts required. Event planning experience is also required.
Good organizational and administrative skills including the ability to multi-task.
The proven ability to solicit and close gifts. Excellent interpersonal skills and good oral and written presentation skills are needed. Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software is needed.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is necessary to represent ADL and attend community fundraising events. Frequent travel within the region is required. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
