Job Title: Associate Director
Reports To: Executive Director
Type of Position: Regular Full‐Time

The Associate Director contributes to the outreach, communications, program development, organization of the ASA’s annual meeting, and general administration of the Secretariat of the ASA. The position is based within the ASA Secretariat office in New Brunswick, NJ on the campus of Rutgers University.

The Associate Director reports to, and works closely with, the Executive Director, and has regular contact with the ASA staff, membership, coordinate organizations, and other key ASA constituencies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Outreach and Communications (25%)
– Design marketing and outreach to new constituencies
– Assist with the ASA’s social media strategy, including the overall strategy for the ASA’s blog and syndication of content on ASA social media
– Develop and update content for the ASA website, including aggregating dynamic information which reflects the current state of the field of African Studies and practical information such as job postings, fellowships, conferences, etc.
– Editorial responsibility for ASA News, the ASA’s monthly newsletter

General Administration and Management (25%)
-Assist the Executive Director with the management of the operations of the ASA Secretariat
– Liaison with Rutgers University on key aspects of the ASA’s hosting agreement, including collaboration with the Center for African Studies at RU
– Provide administrative support to the ED and Board on an ad-hoc basis
– Support the Executive Director to implement, monitor and evaluate institutional policies, strategic plans and systems

ASA Annual Meeting (25%)
-Assist with meeting preparations, including coordination of the participation of special speakers, VIP guests, coordinate organizations, and ASA sponsors
– Provide input to the meeting agenda and structure
– Support the logistical management of the meeting. Depending on the administrative staff capacity, this could include coordinating travel, vendor negotiations, room allocation planning, etc.
– Participate in the meeting as a key player in the onsite team which handles all aspects of the meeting logistics such as registration, the exhibit hall, and special events such as the Award Ceremony, Presidential Lecture, and Abiola Lecture.

Program Development, Funding and Implementation (25%)
-Develop, in collaboration with the Executive Director, new programs and strategic initiatives to be recommended to the ASA Board of Directors
– Support the development of ASA programming in Africa and the development of new program partnerships on the continent
– Assist the Executive Director with fundraising initiatives, including researching new funding streams, grant application preparation, individual donation campaign management, etc.

Qualifications:

5+ years in senior non‐profit management roles, including program and administrative leadership
Proven organizational capacity builder
Practical experience of program planning and implementation
Appreciation of diversity and experience in cross‐cultural collaboration
Ability to think strategically, creatively problem solve, exercise good judgment and lead change
Proven ability to work in a dynamic team and build strong working relationships
High level of written and spoken English
Excellent communicator and writer with experience as a spokesperson who can articulate messages to different audiences
