Academic Director, Charter Middle School – School in the square Public Charter School – New York, NY

The Academic Director job responsibilities include:

1. Meet with school leadership on a regular basis to discuss school goals and plans and to align the schedule and resources to advance teaching and learning
2. Lead colleagues in their professional growth through modeling effective practices, articulating connections between instructional choices and student outcomes, coaching, observing instruction and providing actionable feedback
3. Organize the work of teacher teams and create ongoing opportunities for shared leadership regarding protocols, team leader roles and collaborative strategies
4. Support teachers in developing curriculum maps and lesson plans
5. Assess staff capabilities to plan, manage and facilitate ongoing professional learning that develops the knowledge and skill base of colleagues
6. Develop systems and structures to enable instructional staff to collaboratively plan and hold each other mutually accountable to the work
7. Guide and support the implementation of our assessment system and support the staff in being strategic in the use of data to inform and improve instruction
8. Collaborate with staff to develop common grading policies, reporting systems and student-led conference protocols
9. Contribute to newsletters and other promotional materials, and participate in school events that communicate with parents and other organizational stakeholders
10. Evaluate the performance of teachers and make recommendations for placement and retention
11. Participate in summer professional development and onboarding of students

Qualifications:

1. Minimum of 5 years working in education with outstanding evaluations and recommendations
2. Experience and success in teaching middle school students in alignment with CCLS
3. Ability to be self-guided, work autonomously and demonstrate a reflective attitude
4. Experience developing and implementing curriculum maps and lesson plans
5. Experience using an inquiry process to support teachers in the review of student work and data
6. Ability to actively and systematically assess student work to track progress and inform teaching, using multiple school-wide or grade-wide data sources to identify next steps
7. Successful implementation of differentiation strategies for all students, including ELLs and SWDs
8. Experience building the capacity of others through leading professional learning communities, designing PD, facilitating the work of teams of teachers and building consensus among diverse adult learners
9. Knowledge of curriculum across multiple disciplines and reading and writing in the content areas
10. Strong written and communication skills and adeptness using digital media
11. Prior work experience that demonstrates timely completion of work, effective organizational and management skills, strong collaboration skills, and an understanding of the interconnectedness of various elements of a school organization
12. Knowledge of NYCDOE academic systems are preferred
13. Ability to identify and manage educational partnerships and instructional resources
