JOB SUMMARY

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is currently seeking an innovative and motivated Vice President of Communications to join our leadership team. This individual will be responsible for implementing SHM’s communications strategic plan designed to maximize engagement with the hospital medicine community, optimize digital strategies to promote and enhance the organization’s brand, and expand the reach of SHM branded content and publications.

The Vice President of Communications oversees the Communications Department including management of staff, strategy, execution and metrics and serves as strategic counsel to other SHM senior leaders and Board of Directors. The highly motivated Communications Department is structured to provide the following core functions:

Media relations
Management of branded publications and digital content
Digital content licensing and syndication
Search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns
Social media optimization
Management of SHMs special interest communities, Hospital Medicine Exchange (HMX)
Delivery of exceptional user experiences across all digital channels

A successful candidate must demonstrate a proven record of driving successful strategic initiatives, achieving high level and ambitious program and budget goals, aligning publications and technology needs with organizational goals, and effective responsive team leadership. SHM’s Vice President of Communications will be a skilled and emotionally intelligent collaborator and actively engage and inspire the Society’s staff, key leaders and Board of Directors.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Branded Publications & Digital Content

Ensure quality and excellence throughout all SHM publications
Supervise SHM’s Publishing partners
Integrate and align SHM’s publications and digital content
Establish best practices for content development
Optimize dissemination strategies
Monitor growth and financial performance
Encourage innovations to engage SHM members and prospects

Ensure exceptional user experience across all SHM digital content
Supervise educational efforts to train staff in best practices for digital content creation
Lead internal teams to select and implement strategies for indexing and managing digital content
Evaluate and recommend new strategies to engage members and prospects

    Content licensing and syndication

Develop a robust business model to license and syndicate highly sought after content by diverse partners including professional health channels, social networks, quality forums, education forums and others.
Establish and manage relationships with digital partners and vendors

    Social media

Extend SHMs reach through social media optimization
Support key organization leaders to broadcast SHM messages via social media
Maximize engagement with member and subscriber audiences through SHMs internal social media platform, Hospital Medicine Exchange (HMX)

    Branding and messaging

Ensure leaders speak with a consistent voice to promote SHMs mission values and function and promote the value of hospital medicine.
Develop strategic partnerships to strengthen SHM campaigns and cobrand messages.

    Media relations

Maintain and grow SHM relationships with healthcare and mass media partners
Serve as primary contact for media inquiries, outreach and monitoring

    Assess and report metrics for Communications Department key functions

Publications growth, revenue and innovations
Search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC)
Social media reach and exposure
Provide ongoing analysis for SHMs digital channels and create trends reports
Partner with publishers and vendors to provide ongoing analysis for SHM’s branded publications

    Organizational Leadership

Lead by example, creating a positive work environment, collaborating and celebrating the success of the team
Manage and engage Communications Department staff toward organizational, departmental and individual goals
Serve as strategic counsel to senior executive staff and SHM Board
Serve as a consultant to the Center for Hospital Innovation and Improvement in health related campaign development and assessment including forecasting, proposal strategy, creative design and positioning
Serve as a consultant to marketing teams developing campaigns to engage and attract new members

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 10 years in communications, media relations and related fields
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required, an advanced degree is preferred
Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic, tactical, and financial goals
Demonstrated success for translating a strategic vision into innovation, action plans and measurable achievements.
Demonstrated interest in innovation and behavior change in healthcare
Extensive experience writing, producing and editing for multiple platforms, including print publications, digital channels, social media and media relations
Experience managing vendors to produce multimedia content and keeping them accountable for timelines, budgets and outcomes.
Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
Experience in building, mentoring and coaching a team of communications specialists
Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of high-performing Board of Directors
Self-reliant
Results oriented
Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
Sense of humor and desire to participate in a positive and energetic work environment.
