UAEM Media / Communications Summer Associate – Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) – Washington, DC

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is offering a summer associate position for one student interested in learning about global access to essential medicine issues while having the ability to contribute to the day-to-day functions of a growing non-profit organization. UAEM is a non-profit student-led organization working with universities to change the way in which medical discoveries are patented and licensed with pharmaceutical companies, in order to ensure that medicines are accessible around the world and not priced out of the reach of those who need them.

The associate will learn about UAEM’s campaign work involving subjects such as global health, intellectual property, human rights and policy research, as well as non-profit development, communications, event planning, and organizing at university campuses for social change.This internship is ideal for anyone with a strong interest in communications and campaigning via universities for equitable access to essential medicines for all.

Objective:Provide administrative, research, writing and editing support to the UAEM team while providing practical learning experience to an applicant interested in communications and campaigns on global health and the access to medicines movement.

Reports to:Executive Director/Development officer

Type of position:Intern, modest stipend available

Time Commitment:16 – 20 hrs/week

Duration: 10 weeks

Location:Washington, DC or remote

Duties: The communications associate will work closely with UAEM staff – in particular with the Executive Director, the Development Officer and the Campus Campaign Organizer. The associate will provide day-to-day research support and meet project-based needs as they arise.

Contribute to the writing, editing and production and updating of electronic and printed materials on Campaign-related topics

Work with staff and students to build general administrative support as required

Support communications initiatives as they arise in response to developing global health landscape, including conducting research and summarizing relevant information

Skills: Applicants should have:

Relevant experience in public communications and a technical field such as medicine, science and/or global health

Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, and experience in developing different types of content for different audiences and mediums

Excellent attention to detail, organization and coordination skills.

Strong research skills and proficiency in drawing relevant information from highly technical content

Full command of Microsoft Office suite of products;

Commitment to the public interest, with an interest in medical humanitarian aid and the struggle for access to essential medicines in developing countries

Preferred:

Graphic design and layout skills a plus, including familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and/or Photoshop.

Ability to work independently on a number of separate, simultaneous tasks in a fast-paced work environment.

Additional Information:

Given the part time nature of this internship, there is a preference for students who are based in the DC metro area where the UAEM office is located. However, exceptional candidates from across the country will be considered. This is a 10 week summer associate position to be completed during the 2015 summer term. A minimum of 16-20 hours of work per week will be expected.
