About Us: Mississippi News and Information Corporation (MSNIC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan digital news startup that will aggressively and objectively cover state and local government affairs and community issues, including education, health, poverty and race, as well as Mississippi’s social culture. We are seeking reporters to join our staff based in Jackson, MS. The staff will produce high-quality reporting to act as a government watchdog, support the functioning democracy and help shape the future of the state. We believe that increasing citizen awareness, including how government action affects people and communities, will lead to greater civic engagement. Job Description and Qualifications:

Leading role in planning and implementing MSNIC’s social media strategy and outreach. The editor will manage the sharing of MSNIC reporting across social media platforms and explore new channels for future engagement.

Candidates for this position should have 1-2 years of experience managing social media operations for a collegiate or professional news organization and have a keen interest in state and local politics, government and public policy.

Maintain MSNIC’s social media accounts as well as steadily increase reader engagement. Coordinate with reporters and editors to package and distribute daily news reports and enterprise projects on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+, Instagram, Snapchat and other outlets for maximum performance.

Engage viewers with social discussions (commenting, surveys, email, etc.).

Monitor comments about MSNIC content and news events on social media, with the ability to summarize and communicate information to management.

Respond quickly and accurately to breaking news, reporting live on social platforms when necessary.

Measure content performance on each social media platform and recommend changes in strategy to increase reader engagement.

Maintain awareness of latest trends in social media, implement new tools and train staff on their best use.

Work with a variety of digital content, including audio, video and photography.

Exhibit excellent writing and communication skills, understanding of journalistic ethics and procedures, and be proficient in AP style.

Work collaboratively with a team and handle multiple assignments under tight deadline pressure.

College degree in journalism, public policy or equivalent study is preferred.

Understanding of the 24/7 nature of digital journalism, which requires a flexible schedule and weekend work as needed.
