Summer Energy and Poverty Policy Research Associate

Economic Opportunity Studies, Inc. seeks a summer research associate to develop and maintain resources that local Community Action Agencies can use to build residential energy efficiency programs and partnerships between low-income communities and utilities.

Project tasks include but are not limited to:

Interviewing program leaders in local and state organizations to learn what works and what is needed in programs that make energy affordable;
Finding, reporting on and organizing, information about electric and gas utility low-income efficiency programs and the regulations that govern them.
Developing short reports on consumer-related issues
Analyzing program-related financial or quantitative data and reports
Assisting with other analyses of efficiency and related programs for low-and moderate-income people and communities,
Assisting with other projects of our non-profit organizations such as meetings, web site updates and social media.
Presenting materials in written and visual formats that can be useful tools for local community and state Weatherization delivery agencies to use in advocating for similar initiatives.

This position is ideal for a graduate student with a background in public policy, environmental and/or regulatory studies or related disciplines or a person with experience in legal, legislative and/or regulatory research. The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, but we invite less-than perfect applicants to apply, too.

Education:

At least a Bachelor’s degree, graduate degree or student preferred.

Work Experience:

Two years [or the equivalent time in several short-term positions]

Experience with any of the following is especially desirable

Community-based organizations
Projects related to energy efficiency, clean energy and/or sustainable housing and community development
Advocacy focused on consumer protection, affordable housing and/or community development
Federal and state policy research

Preferred Skills [as demonstrated in academic work or on a recent job]:

Policy and regulatory analysis including descriptive statistics and budgetary/program data
Demonstrated ability to talk to/interview a variety of individuals and professionals
Working knowledge of energy efficiency programs, initiatives and terminology
Experience using government and other records to locate program and fiscal information
Proficiency with Microsoft Office software suite and general web user skills
Demonstrated high productivity and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as a member of a small, busy team

Work Arrangements

In our office near Union station
Compensation: $20 /hour or more depending on experience (no benefits offered except employer share of payroll taxes and paid federal holidays)
This is a short-term job from late May through August or mid-September and requires a commitment of at least 30 hours per week, 40 hours is preferred
We can adjust exact weekly schedules to accommodate the Associate’s needs or obligations.
